Overlashing a new cable onto an existing aerial strand means pulling it along the span before the lasher goes to work, and a cable dragged over the strand and the old lashing snags, scuffs, and fights the pull the whole way. The Jonard Tools CR-150/6 is a six-pack of cable rollers that snap over the strand so the new cable rides on a roller instead of the steel. Each roller takes cables up to 1 in diameter, fiber optic included, and its rolling design keeps the cable from catching on the strand hardware, the existing bundle, or the lashing wire as it's pulled. The rollers are molded from durable nylon plastic, built for the rugged treatment aerial work hands out, and they snap on and off quickly, so a crew can space them down a span, make the pull, and collect them behind the lasher. Six rollers to a pack, with a lifetime warranty.

Features

  • Cables up to 1 in (25.4 mm). Including fiber optic cable.
  • Snaps over the strand. Quick to install and remove for overlash construction.
  • Roller design. Helps prevent the cable from snagging and catching during the pull.
  • Durable nylon plastic. Rugged design, built to last.
  • Six rollers per pack. Enough to space along a span.
  • Lifetime warranty.

Where It Fits

It suits aerial construction crews overlashing fiber or coax onto an existing strand, telecom and cable contractors adding a second or third cable to a span that already carries one, fiber-to-the-home builders running new drop and distribution fiber along existing plant, utility and broadband line crews who'd rather roll the cable in than drag it, anyone who has pulled a fiber cable over a strand by hand and found the jacket scuffed at every pole, and a bucket truck that already carries the lasher, the strand grips, and the pulling grips. For the pulls that happen indoors, the CPF-215 Cable Funnel protects a drop-ceiling pull the same way, and the CCB-25 Cable Comb dresses the bundle afterward.

Good to Know

The rollers go on the strand, not the cable: snap them over the messenger at intervals along the span, pull the new cable through them, and collect them as the lasher works down the span behind the pull. Space them so the cable can't sag onto the strand or the existing bundle between rollers, and put one close to each pole where the pull changes direction, since that's where a cable catches. The 1 in limit is the cable diameter at the roller, so a cable with a splice case, a pulling grip, or a swivel on the end has to clear the roller too; check the grip before the pull rather than at the first roller. Pull steadily and within the cable's rated tension and bend radius, and stop and look if the pull suddenly loads up, because a roller that has rotated or a snag at a pole costs less to fix than a kinked fiber. Nylon shrugs off weather and won't mark a jacket, but it does wear, so retire a roller whose surface has gouged. Aerial work has its own rules on strand grounding, bonding, and clearance from power; the rollers are a pulling aid, not a substitute for any of that.
