Electrician's scissors are the tool that gets used a hundred times a day, which is why the handle matters as much as the blade. The Jonard Tools ES-1964ERG are 6 in chrome vanadium steel scissors, hardened with a special process for durability and cutting performance, with an ergonomic plastic loop handle that's more comfortable than a standard scissor handle over a day of cuts. A serrated edge on one blade keeps wire from sliding out of the cut, and the scissor-run design goes through Kevlar® and wire alike, so the same scissors trim the aramid in a fiber cable and the pairs in a copper one. Notches in the blades skin 18 to 20 AWG and 22 to 24 AWG wire, and a scraper and a file sit on the back of the blade for cleaning a conductor or dressing an edge. The ES-1964 is the same scissor with a standard handle and the ES-1964DS is the free-fall version; the ERG also ships in the TK-17, TK-145, and TK-RJ550 kits. Lifetime warranty.

Features

  • Ergonomic handle. More comfortable than standard scissor handles through a day of repetitive cuts.
  • Serrated blade and scissor-run design. The serrations hold wire in the cut, and the blades handle Kevlar® and wire.
  • Skinning notches. Strip 18 to 20 AWG and 22 to 24 AWG wire without a second tool.
  • Scraper and file. On the back of the blade, for cleaning a conductor and dressing an edge.
  • Chrome vanadium steel. Hardened with a special process for durability and cutting performance.
  • Lifetime warranty.

Where It Fits

It suits telecom and structured cabling technicians trimming pairs, jackets, and pull string at the block and the patch panel, fiber techs cutting the aramid yarn in a cable that the ST-500 stripper has opened, electricians and controls techs skinning 18 to 24 AWG conductors at a terminal strip, alarm and intercom installers who make most of their cuts in station wire, anyone whose hand aches after a day with a standard-handle scissor, a replacement for the pair that came in a TK-17, TK-145, or TK-RJ550 kit, and a pouch that already has the punch-down tool and the JIC-7858 diagonal cutter. For a standard scissor handle, the ES-1964; for the free-fall handle, the ES-1964DS; for Kevlar in volume, the JIC-190 flush-cut Kevlar cutters.

Good to Know

Use the serrated blade against the wire so the serrations hold it; a cut that slides is one made with the smooth side leading. Pick the skinning notch by the conductor, 18 to 20 AWG in the larger and 22 to 24 AWG in the smaller, close the blades on the insulation, and pull the wire straight out; a wire pulled through the smaller notch is nicked, and a nicked conductor is where it breaks later. Kevlar dulls steel faster than copper does, so expect to touch up the plain blade on a stone now and then, and leave the serrated blade alone, since sharpening removes the serrations. These are scissors, not cutters; a solid conductor heavier than 18 AWG, a screw, or hardened material belongs in the JIC-683 lineman's pliers. The scraper on the back of the blade cleans oxidation off a conductor before a crimp and the file dresses a burr; neither is a substitute for the right tool on a bigger job. The handle is for comfort, not insulation, and the steel conducts, so the circuit is dead before the scissors go in the box. Wipe the blades dry after a wet job and oil the pivot now and then; chrome vanadium resists rust but doesn't ignore it.
