The Jonard Tools WTL-34 Wall Box Template and Level handles the big openings: 3-gang and 4-gang cutouts for non-metallic old work boxes. A wide box is where a freehand layout goes wrong, because a sixteenth of tilt at one end is a visible slope at the other, so the template has built-in levels and centerlines running both directions to keep a long opening straight and centered from end to end. It marks a 5.94 × 3.64 in outline for a 3-gang box and a 7.71 × 3.64 in outline for a 4-gang, sized for Carlon B355R and B468R old work boxes and any other boxes the same size. Rubber strips hold it on the wall without scuffing the finish, and a pair of screw holes let you fasten it in place when you want both hands free to mark or cut. It's molded from blue thermal plastic and covered by a lifetime warranty. For 1-gang and 2-gang work, the WTL-12 is the smaller template in the same family.

Good to Know

The template marks the cutout for the box; check that your box is one of the sizes it's made for before you cut, since an old work box from another maker can be a fraction larger or smaller and a cutout that's right for the Carlon box may need trimming. Find the studs before you mark: a 4-gang box is wide enough that a stud often falls inside the outline, and the template can't tell you that. Hold the template to the wall, bring the bubbles to center, and trace the outline; if the wall has a level trim line or an existing plate nearby, line the centerlines up on that as well, because a level box next to a slightly off-level counter or trim can look wrong even when it isn't. Use the screw holes when you'll be cutting with the template in place, and fill the two small holes afterward; they'll be covered by the plate on most installs. The levels are for the template, not the box; a box that goes into a square hole still needs to be checked before the ears are tightened. The template is a marking tool and doesn't cut; a drywall saw or an oscillating tool does that, and the plastic edge will guide a pencil but not a blade.
