The Jonard Tools WTL-32M Wall Box Template and Level is the metal box version of the wall template, made for single and double gang metal old work (remodel) boxes. A metal remodel box has mounting ears that need their own clearance in the cutout, which is the detail a plastic-box template gets wrong, so this one has triangular notches that show you exactly where to cut around them. Centerlines running both ways and built-in levels get the opening centered and plumb before the first cut. It marks a 1.94 × 3.06 in outline for a 1-gang box and a 3.75 × 3.06 in outline for a 2-gang, sized to fit Hubbell RACO 506 switch boxes and similar metal old work boxes, and rubber strips and screw holes keep it on the wall while you trace.

Where It Fits

Good to Know

This is the template for metal boxes; the ear notches are the difference, and a non-metallic old work box with its own wing clamps uses a plain rectangle, which is the WTL-12 and WTL-34's job. Check that your box matches the RACO 506 size before you cut, since metal remodel boxes from other makers can differ by a fraction and the cutout may need trimming. Find the studs first: the template can't tell you what's behind the wall, and a 2-gang box wants clear space on both sides. Hold the template to the wall, bring the bubbles to center, trace the outline and the notches, and cut the notches as marked rather than rounding them out, because a metal box's ears bear on the back of the drywall and an oversized notch leaves them nothing to grip. If there's a level trim line or an existing plate nearby, line the centerlines up on that as well, since a level box next to off-level trim can look wrong even when it isn't. Use the screw holes when you'll be cutting with the template in place; the two small holes will be covered by the plate. The template marks; a drywall saw or an oscillating tool cuts, and the plastic edge guides a pencil, not a blade.
