Wire rope is the cable that ruins cable cutters: a copper cutter's edge rolls on the first steel strand, and side cutters crush the rope into a broom. The Jonard Tools WRC-140 is a cutter made for it, an 8 in tool in heat-treated chrome vanadium steel with precision-ground blades that shear soft and hard wire rope, spring wire, and copper and aluminum cable up to 1/4 in (6.35 mm). The shearing cut leaves the rope end tight enough to feed into a ferrule or a thimble without unraveling, which is the point of a wire rope cutter over a general one. A volute spring opens the handles after each cut, a locking latch keeps the tool closed in the bag, and cushioned ergonomic grips give the leverage a hard cut needs. At 0.61 lb it goes in a pouch, which is where a rigging, fencing, or suspended-ceiling job needs it.

Features

  • Wire rope, spring wire, copper, and aluminum. Cuts soft and hard wire rope, spring wire, and copper or aluminum cable, up to 1/4 in (6.35 mm) jaw capacity.
  • Heat-treated chrome vanadium steel. For strength and durability on steel strand that dulls an ordinary cutter.
  • Precision-ground blades. A sharp, true shearing edge for easier cutting and a tight rope end.
  • Volute spring. Opens and closes the tool with less effort between cuts.
  • Locking latch. Keeps the tool closed when it's not in use.
  • Cushioned ergonomic grips. Greater leverage and comfort on a hard cut.

Where It Fits

It suits riggers and installers cutting aircraft cable and wire rope for suspended ceilings, light fixtures, signage, and cable railings, telecom and CATV crews trimming steel strand lashing wire and small guy wire at the pole, fence and gate contractors cutting tension wire and cable, HVAC and mechanical trades hanging equipment on wire rope, electricians who meet copper, aluminum, and steel cable on the same job and want one cutter that handles all three in the small sizes, anyone whose copper cutter has a notch in it from the one time it met steel, and a toolbox that needs a wire rope cutter but not a 24 in one. For copper and aluminum only in larger sizes, the JIC-63050 and the RC-series ratcheting cutters; for soft copper and coax, the JIC-625 and JIC-725; for ACSR, the RC-336ACSR.

Good to Know

The 1/4 in jaw capacity is the largest rope the jaws take, and the material sets how hard the cut is: soft wire rope and copper cut easily at the full capacity, hard wire rope and spring wire take more force and are best kept below it. Wrap the rope with a turn of tape on each side of the cut line before cutting, so the strands stay laid after the cut; a rope cut without tape unravels at the end and won't feed a ferrule. Set the rope square in the jaws at the tape line and close the handles in one steady stroke; a cut in two bites or at an angle leaves a stepped end, and a rope that won't seat in the jaws is over the capacity. Keep hands and face clear of the cut, since a cut end of wire rope springs and the loose ends are sharp enough to go through a glove. This cutter is for wire rope, spring wire, and copper and aluminum cable; it isn't for hardened bolts, chain, or anything heat treated, and it isn't for ACSR or large copper, which have their own cutters. A wipe of oil on the pivot and the blades keeps the volute spring and the action smooth, and a cutter that leaves the rope frayed rather than sheared is a cutter whose edge has met something it shouldn't have. Lock the latch before the tool goes in a pouch.
