Every fiber that gets stripped gets wiped before it's cleaved, and every connector that gets mated gets cleaned first, which makes the wipe the most used consumable in a splice kit. The Jonard Tools FW-50 is a pack of 50 single-use fiber wipes, 3 × 4 in, saturated with 91% isopropyl alcohol and 9% deionized water: a nonabrasive, residue-free solvent that lifts dust, dirt, oil, and magnetic oxide buildup from optical surfaces, bare fiber, and connector end faces, and evaporates before it can leave anything behind. Each pad is lint-free and used once, so there's no cross-contamination from one fiber to the next, and the solvent is compatible with most plastics, glass, and metals, so it's safe on connector bodies, adapters, and the tools themselves.

Good to Know

On bare fiber, wipe once from the coating toward the cleaved end in one pass, with the fiber held straight, and then don't touch the glass again; a second pass with the same pad puts the first pass's dirt back on. On a connector, the wet wipe is the first half of a wet-to-dry clean: wipe the end face with the wet pad, then follow with a dry lint-free wipe or a push cleaner before the alcohol dries on the ferrule, since alcohol that evaporates on the end face can leave a film. Check with a microscope where you can. Keep the pack sealed between uses; the alcohol evaporates from an open pack and a dry pad is just a pad. Isopropyl alcohol is flammable and the vapor is heavy, so keep the wipes away from the fusion splicer's arc and from anything that sparks, and don't use them in a closed manhole without ventilation. Compatible with most plastics doesn't mean all; test on an unfamiliar plastic before wiping a whole batch. Used wipes carry fiber scraps, so they go in the scraps can with the glass, not the open bin.
