Waterproof RJ45 Cable Cap, IP67 (CAP-IP67)

An RJ45 plug is an indoor connector, and the moment it goes outside, into a wash-down area, or onto a machine, water and grit find the contacts. This IP67 cable cap seals the plug end of a patch cord so it doesn't have to: the plug passes through the body, the body's internal thread screws onto a matching IP67 RJ45 jack, and a sealing nut on the cable side compresses a rubber gasket around the cable jacket, so the connection inside stays dust-tight and watertight from both ends. The body and nut are high-impact nylon PA-66, UL94V-0 flame rated and 30 percent glass fiber reinforced, which is what lets it take a knock in a machine shop without cracking. It's rated for operation from −10 to 60 °C and storage down to −40 °C, it's black, and it turns an ordinary Cat5e or Cat6 patch cord into one that can live in a factory, a warehouse, or outdoors.

Good to Know

The cap is one half of a sealed connection; it protects the plug only when the body is screwed onto a matching IP67 RJ45 jack or coupler, and a cap on a plug pushed into an ordinary jack seals nothing. The body has an internal thread on the jack side and the sealing nut goes on the cable side, so slide the nut, the gasket, and the body onto the cable in that order before the plug is terminated or plugged in, since none of them pass over a crimped plug; the gallery photos show the retainer and the assembled cord. Plug in, screw the body down onto the jack until it seats, then run the sealing nut up until the gasket compresses on the jacket, and stop; over-tightening a glass-filled nylon nut cracks it. Match the gasket to the cable jacket, because the back seal is what keeps water out of the cap, and a thin cable in a gasket meant for a thick one leaks at the entry rather than the face. IP67 means dust-tight and protected against immersion to a meter for half an hour; it's a rating for rain, wash-down, and a puddle, not for a connector that lives underwater, and it says nothing about grease and solvents beyond keeping them off the contacts, so wipe the cap down rather than letting it soak. The operating range starts at −10 °C; a cap that will see a colder winter can be stored to −40 °C but the seal is only rated in use above −10. Nylon takes UV better than most plastics, but a black cap in full sun for years will chalk; check the gasket when you check the cable.
