Tight-buffered fiber has two layers over the glass, the 900 µm buffer and the 250 µm coating under it, and each comes off at its own diameter. The Jonard Tools JIC-275 is a 6 in two-hole fiber optic stripper for exactly that fiber: the first hole strips the 600 to 900 µm buffer to expose the 250 µm coated fiber, and the second strips the coating to expose the 125 µm glass, with both holes preset at the factory so there's nothing to adjust and no guess that could nick or scratch the fiber. An angled jaw guides the fiber into the second hole so it isn't cut by accident. The tool is high carbon steel with ground and hardened blades, thermoplastic rubber handles, and a safety lock that keeps it closed in the kit, and it's backed by a lifetime warranty. For jacketed 1.6 to 3.0 mm cable, the three-hole JIC-375 adds the jacket strip.

Good to Know

Work from the outside in: buffer in the first hole, coating in the second, and take the buffer off before starting on the coating, since the second hole is sized for 250 µm and will crush a 900 µm buffer. Strip the coating in short pulls of an inch or so rather than one long pull, and keep the tool square to the fiber, since twisting or angling it is what scratches the glass; the angled jaw helps with the aim, but the pull is still yours. Strip only as much as the splice or the connector calls for. A strip that leaves shreds of coating on the fiber means the blades need cleaning, which a fiber wipe and a little alcohol fixes; a strip that keeps breaking the fiber means the tool is being pulled off-axis or the blades have reached the end of their life, since there's no adjustment to make. Wipe the bare fiber with an alcohol wipe after stripping and before cleaving, and don't touch the glass once it's clean. The tool has no jacket hole; a jacketed cable's outer sheath comes off first with a slit and ring tool or the JIC-375, and this tool picks up at the buffer. The stripped buffer, coating, and any broken fiber go in a scraps can, not the floor. Lock the tool before it goes back in the kit.
