A tap port with a trap on it and a security sleeve over the connector is two tools' worth of work, and the Jonard Tools TTS-716 puts both on one 8 in handle. One end is a trap wrench, with a two-prong tip for standard traps; the other is a security sleeve tool whose wrench fits all metal 7/16 in hex F fittings and reaches inside a sleeve of any size to the connector underneath. The body is aluminum, light enough to live on the belt all day, with a hardened steel security socket where the wear is, and the whole tool is anodized blue, which protects the aluminum and makes it the one that's easy to spot in a pouch or on the ground under a tap.

Features

  • Trap wrench and security sleeve tool in one. A two-prong trap end and a 7/16 in security end on one handle, for all standard traps and all sizes of security sleeves.
  • Fits all metal 7/16 in hex F fittings. The security wrench reaches the connector inside the sleeve.
  • Aluminum body. Lightweight and durable.
  • Hardened steel security socket. Steel where the tool wears, for longer life.
  • Anodized blue. Easy to identify, with added protection for the aluminum.

Where It Fits

It suits CATV and broadband technicians installing and removing traps and filters at the tap and securing the connectors under sleeves on the same visit, audit and theft-of-service crews who add and pull traps by the dozen and sleeve the ports they leave behind, MDU technicians working lock boxes where every port has a trap, a sleeve, or both, service techs who'd rather carry one combo tool than a trap wrench and a separate sleeve tool, anyone who has dropped the second tool from a ladder while holding the first, and a belt that already has the terminator tools and wants the trap and sleeve covered too. For locking terminators rather than traps and sleeves, the TT-4, TT-7, and TT-7PT (spring-ear and prong) and the TTCG-6270-5 and -9 (Corning Gilbert cam) are the matching tools; for 9/16 in shielded RG11 connectors, the SST-916.

Good to Know

Traps and security sleeves are the operator's hardware, and the tool is for technicians authorized to add, remove, and secure them; carry it on the strength of the work order. Use the trap end on traps and the security end on sleeves, and seat each fully before turning; the two-prong trap tip engages the trap's drive holes, and a trap that won't turn is seized or a nonstandard type rather than a dull prong. On the security end, the 7/16 in wrench is sized for metal F fittings; a plastic-bodied fitting or a 9/16 in RG11 connector is a different job. The sleeve end is long enough to reach a connector inside any size of sleeve, which also means it's long enough to tilt, so keep the tool in line with the port as you turn. Leave every port you open either trapped, sleeved, or terminated, since an open tap port is both a leak and an invitation. Aluminum is light and won't rust, and the anodizing protects it, but the body is softer than steel; the hardened socket is where the force goes, so don't use the aluminum end as a hammer or a pry. Tap ports on a powered plant can be live; check before working at the tap.
