Prong terminators lock differently from spring-ear ones, and a tool for one usually can't turn the other. The Jonard Tools TT-7PT is the 7-1/2 in terminator tool that does both: its tip carries prongs designed for PPC502, T&B CLF, and TRL prong terminators, and it fits the same spring-ear locking terminators as the TT-7, including Gilbert Engineering GTP (Morlock), PRC, LFT, PCT, TPG, TR 75 GTL (Viewsonics), and Signal Vision SV-LT and SV-LTA, as well as NO-3 and NO-4 Pedlock pedestal locks. The chrome vanadium steel shaft sits on an ergonomic 1-1/4 in handle shaped for grip and leverage, so a weathered terminator of either type turns without the tool twisting in the hand, and the tip is shaped to keep foreign debris out. For a plant that mixes PPC prong terminators with Gilbert and Signal Vision spring-ear ones, it's the one tool instead of two.

Good to Know

Locking terminators are access control for the operator's plant, and the tool is for technicians authorized to open and secure those ports; carry it on the strength of the work order. Identify the terminator before you seat the tool: a prong terminator takes the prongs, a spring-ear terminator takes the tip around its ears, and a cam-style terminator such as the Corning Gilbert NS-5762 takes a different tool entirely, so one that won't engage is the wrong type rather than a dull tip. Seat the tool squarely, push until it engages, and turn; the handle gives real leverage, which means a terminator that still won't move is seized or wrong, and forcing it is how a prong bends or an ear breaks off inside the port. Keep the tool in line with the port as you turn, since an angled tip on a long tool cams off the terminator and marks it. Put the terminator back on every port you open and don't leave terminated, since an open tap port is both a leak and an invitation. The tip is shaped to keep debris out, but a tap in the weather still collects grit; knock the tool out before it goes back in the pouch, check the prongs for bending, and a wipe of oil on the shaft keeps the chrome vanadium from pitting. Tap ports on a powered plant can be live; check before working at the tap.
