Bonding the shield of a telephone or power cable at a splice means cutting a tab in the sheath and the metallic shield under it, lengthwise, so the bond clamp can bite the shield and carry it to ground. A knife does it badly and a side cutter can't reach. The Jonard Tools TS-850 Cable Tabbing Shears are made for that cut: 8 in shears in heat-treated chrome vanadium steel with precision-ground blades that make clean longitudinal cuts in cable sheath and copper or aluminum shield, with a 1-1/4 in (31.75 mm) jaw capacity and thin 0.17 in jaws that slip under the sheath. Good to Know

A tab for a bond clamp is a lengthwise cut, not a crosscut: ring the sheath first with a slitter or ring tool, then slide the thin jaw under the sheath and shield at the ring and cut back along the cable the length the clamp needs, with a second cut parallel to it if the clamp wants a strip rather than a flap. Keep the jaw flat against the shield as it goes under, since a jaw angled into the cable cuts the pair insulation or the conductors beneath. The 1-1/4 in capacity is the jaw opening; the shears cut sheath and shield, not the core, so a cable larger than that is handled by cutting the tab in sections rather than by forcing the jaws. The blades are precision ground for sheath and thin metal shield; they aren't for cutting conductors, armor, strand, or steel, which notch an edge made for aluminum and copper foil and tape. Watch the cut edges of the shield, which are sharp enough to cut a hand and a pair; fold them under the clamp or trim them. Let the spring open the handles, and latch them before the shears go in a pouch. A wipe of oil on the pivot keeps the volute spring and the action smooth. Shield bonding is grounding work: confirm the cable is dead and the bond is in place before anything else is touched.
