A spool of cable on the floor pays out in loops, picks up grit, and rolls away when it's pulled; a spool on a rod pays out straight. The Jonard Tools CC-2721 is a steel cable caddy that puts the spool on a rod: one reel up to 17 in in diameter and 20 in wide, weighing up to 100 lb, which covers a 1,000 ft reel of Cat6, a fiber reel, or a spool of coax. The frame is 7/8 in tubular steel with dual leg chains that hold the legs at a fixed spread, slip-resistant rubber feet that keep it put on a slick floor and keep the floor unmarked, and a folding mechanism that collapses it to about an inch thick for the truck. Setup is set it down, pull the cotter pin, and load the reel. Lifetime warranty. For two reels at once, the CC-5442 is the double-decker version of the same frame.

Where It Fits
It suits structured cabling crews pulling Cat5e and Cat6 from 1,000 ft reels on a commercial fit-out, fiber installers paying out a reel at the pull point instead of off the floor, low-voltage and security contractors running coax, speaker, and alarm cable through a building from a caddy parked at the ceiling access, AV integrators and electricians who'd rather carry a folded 8 lb frame than a reel stand that stays set up, warehouse and shop stock rooms that keep the working reel on a rod instead of a shelf, anyone who has chased a reel across a finished floor or pulled a loop of cable into a knot off a spool on its side, and a truck that already carries the FTS-240 fish tape and the CPF-215 Cable Funnel for the pulls the caddy feeds. For two reels on one stand, the CC-5442 double-decker; bulk Cat6, fiber, and coax reels from the cable collections are what it's built to hold.
Good to Know
The 100 lb rating is for the reel on the rod, so check the reel weight before loading something heavier than a standard 1,000 ft box reel; a full 1,000 ft reel of Cat6 is typically 30 to 35 lb, and a 17 in reel of coax or fiber can run heavier. The 17 in limit is set by the floor clearance and the 20 in limit by the rod length, and a reel with a center hole smaller than the 5/8 in rod won't go on. Set the caddy on a level, clear patch of floor, spread the legs until the chains are taut, and refit the cotter pin after loading so the rod can't walk out under a pull. Pull from the top of the reel at a steady pace rather than yanking, since a reel that spins free overruns and throws a loop, and brake the reel by hand when the pull stops. The rubber feet hold on a smooth floor but not on a slope, so chock it or move it on a ramp. Fold it only when it's empty, and keep the cotter pin with the frame; it's the one part that goes missing, and the caddy doesn't run safely without it. Steel rusts if it lives in a wet truck bed, so wipe it down after a rainy job.
