Good to Know

The wheels ship loose, so assemble them before the first job and check the fasteners now and then; a wheel that works loose under a 100 lb reel is a reel on the floor. The 100 lb rating is for the reel on the rod, so check the reel weight before loading something heavier than a standard 1,000 ft box reel. The 17 in limit is set by the floor clearance and the 20 in limit by the rod length, and a reel with a center hole smaller than the 5/8 in rod won't go on. Set the caddy on a level, clear patch of floor, spread the legs until the chains are taut, and refit the cotter pin after loading so the rod can't walk out under a pull. Tip it onto the wheels and pull it by the strap to move it, over a smooth floor and never down stairs with a reel on it, and set it back on its legs before you pull cable, since a caddy on its wheels isn't a stable stand. Pull from the top of the reel at a steady pace rather than yanking, and brake the reel by hand when the pull stops. Keep the cotter pin with the frame; it's the one part that goes missing, and the caddy doesn't run safely without it. Steel rusts if it lives in a wet truck bed, so wipe it down after a rainy job.
