ST was the standard fiber connector before SC and LC, and it hasn't gone away: the enclosures, media converters, and wall boxes from a building's first fiber install are usually ST, and so is a lot of industrial and laboratory gear, where the bayonet lock that won't shake loose is the reason people still specify it. This cord has a pair of ST/UPC connectors on each end, for patching between ST panels, or from an ST panel to an ST port on a converter, switch, or instrument, without adapters.

It's OS2 single-mode fiber, 9/125 µm, in a 3.0 mm duplex zipcord that's a little tougher than the usual 2.0 mm patch cord, which suits the plant floors and equipment rooms where ST lives. Each cord is tested and the end-faces are checked by interferometer before it ships.

Where It Fits

It suits jumpers between ST patch panels and enclosures, links from an ST panel to media converters, older switches, and instruments with ST ports, industrial plants and control rooms where a connector that can't shake loose matters, laboratory and test equipment terminated on ST, campus links between buildings whose fiber was terminated on ST, and any single-mode link between two ST ports.

Good to Know

Both ends are UPC, the standard ST polish; APC versions of ST are rare, so this cord fits almost every ST port. The two ST connectors at each end aren't keyed to each other the way a duplex LC or SC clip is, so polarity is set by which plug goes into which port: if the link doesn't come up, swap the two ST ends at one side and try again before troubleshooting anything else. To seat an ST, line up the key on the plug with the slot on the port, push in against the spring, and turn clockwise until it stops; a half-seated ST is the most common cause of a "bad" fiber link. Keep dust caps on until the moment you plug in, and clean both the connector and the port with a 2.5 mm one-click cleaner before mating; a fingerprint on a single-mode ferrule costs more than the whole cord's loss budget. If the far end is SC or LC rather than ST, look at the SC/UPC to ST/UPC or LC/UPC to ST/UPC cord. For runs longer than 30 m, or where the cord will be pulled through conduit, ask about an OFNR-rated cable.
