This is a 12-fiber single-mode ST/UPC pigtail, 3 meters long, with a removable yellow outer jacket. Each of the 12 OS2 fibers is a 900 µm tight-buffered strand with a factory-tested ST/UPC connector on one end and bare fiber on the other for fusion or mechanical splicing. The jacket protects the bundle on the way from the box to the tray and can be stripped back as far as you need, so the strands fan out loose where the space is tight and stay bundled where it isn't. The ST end twists into a bayonet adapter on a panel, so a 12-fiber cable spliced to this pigtail becomes 12 ST ports in one tray. It's the pigtail for an older plant that is still on ST and isn't being converted. It's sold individually, as one 12-strand pigtail. For the same jacketed pigtail with LC connectors, the PGTLC12-SM; for SC/UPC, the PGUSC12-SM; for the enclosure, the RMFP rack-mount panels and the WMFP wall-mount boxes.

Features

  • 12 fibers, ST/UPC. Single-mode OS2, 9/125 µm, with a bayonet UPC connector on each strand.
  • Removable jacket. Strip it back for a tight bend radius in a cramped enclosure, or leave it on for a longer route to the tray.
  • 900 µm tight buffer. Sized for splice tray holders and splicer clamps.
  • Factory-tested. Low insertion loss and return loss.
  • For fusion or mechanical splicing. Bare fiber at the splice end.
  • Yellow. The standard color for single-mode.
  • 3 meter length.
  • Sold individually. One 12-strand pigtail.

Where It Fits

It suits a campus or industrial plant where the fiber panels, the media converters, and the older switches are all on ST and the budget is for adding fibers, not for changing connectors. It suits fiber distribution units and optical distribution frames in a telecom room, and splice trays in a wall-mount box. Crews repairing or extending a legacy single-mode ST backbone use it, and so do integrators splicing new fiber into an existing ST enclosure in a factory or a utility site. A rack that still patches with ST cords is a candidate. It goes with the single-mode bulk fiber, the ST adapters, the splice trays and sleeves, and the fusion splicer from the fiber collections. For the same jacketed pigtail in LC, the PGTLC12-SM. For SC/UPC, the PGUSC12-SM. For rack-mount splice panels, the RMFP-016 and RMFP-018. For a wall-mount box, the WMFP-011. For the ST patch cords on the other side of the panel, the STSTSM, and for ST to the newer LC or SC gear, the LCSTSM and SCSTSM.

Good to Know

ST is a bayonet connector: push it onto the adapter, turn it a quarter turn until it locks, and tug gently to confirm it seated, since a half-locked ST reads as a high-loss link. Each ST is a single fiber, so 12 of them take more panel space than 12 LC and go in a panel built for ST adapters. UPC is the flat-polish, and it mates with UPC adapters and UPC cords; there is no APC version of ST in general use, so the whole channel is UPC. Decide how much jacket to remove before you cut: the jacket is the strength member and the snag guard, so leave it on for the length of the route between the adapter plate and the tray and strip it only where the strands have to fan out and bend, which is usually the last foot or so at the tray. A 3 meter pigtail leaves room for that route in a deep enclosure; coil the excess in the slack ring rather than cutting it short. Strip the 900 µm buffer and the coating back to bare fiber, cleave, splice to the incoming cable, and seat the sleeve in the tray. Dress the bundle and tie it loosely to the tray so the connectors aren't carrying the fibers' weight, and keep the bend radius generous even where the strands are bare. Splice in the standard color sequence and match it to the incoming cable's buffer tubes so the as-built is honest. Clean and inspect every ST ferrule before it goes into an adapter, and keep the dust caps on until then. If the plan is to retire ST eventually, splice the LC version instead and patch to the ST gear with LC-to-ST cords, so the panel doesn't have to be redone later.
