A weather-sealed connector under a security shield is two layers of protection on one port, and a tool that fits the hex of a standard connector doesn't always clear the seal on a water-tight one. The Jonard Tools SST-716AT is the security shield tool for 7/16 in hex water-tight shielded F connectors, made with the PPC Aquatight® EX series in mind: a socket that fits over the sealed connector inside the shield, with a drive that takes a torque wrench so the connector is tightened to spec and the shield locks on at the right torque. The body is machined, heat-treated steel with a black oxide finish, the handle is knurled for grip when the tool is wet, and a steel loop on the end gives leverage for a stubborn connector and hangs the tool on a ring. At 3 in and a couple of ounces, it rides on the key ring with the other tap tools.

Good to Know

Security shields are access control for the operator's plant, and the tool is for technicians authorized to install and remove them; carry it on the strength of the work order. Check the connector before reaching for the tool: this one is sized for 7/16 in water-tight connectors such as the Aquatight EX series, and a 9/16 in RG11 connector needs the SST-916, since a loose socket rounds the hex. Seat the tool fully over the connector inside the shield before turning, and when the connector has to be torqued, drive the tool with a torque wrench set to the connector maker's figure rather than by hand; a shielded, sealed connector is one you won't be back to check, so the torque has to be right the first time, and the loop is for breaking a tight one loose, not for final tightening. Confirm the shield has locked onto the connector before you leave the port, and that the connector's seal is seated, since a shield over a leaking connector only hides the leak. Black oxide resists rust but doesn't prevent it; wipe the tool dry if it's been outside. Tap ports on a powered plant can be live; check before working at the tap.
