A security shield over an F connector keeps a subscriber from unscrewing it, which means the technician needs a tool that reaches inside the shield to the connector's hex. The Jonard Tools SST-716 is that tool for the 7/16 in hex on standard shielded RG6 and RG59 connectors, made for SS-1D and EZ-NLS security shields and NSS Notch-Trap sleeves: a socket that fits over the connector inside the shield, with a drive that takes a torque wrench so the connector is tightened to spec rather than by feel and the shield locks on at the right torque. The body is machined, heat-treated steel with a black oxide finish, the handle is knurled for grip when the tool is wet or the connector is tight, and a steel loop on the end gives leverage for a stubborn connector and hangs the tool on a ring. At 3 in and two ounces, it goes on the key ring with the other tap tools. For water-tight connectors such as the PPC Aquatight EX series, the SST-716AT is the sealed-connector version.

Good to Know

Security shields are access control for the operator's plant, and the tool is for technicians authorized to install and remove them; carry it on the strength of the work order. Check the connector and the shield before reaching for the tool: this is the standard-type tool for SS-1D and EZ-NLS shields and NSS Notch-Trap sleeves over 7/16 in connectors, a water-tight connector such as the Aquatight EX takes the SST-716AT, and a 9/16 in RG11 connector takes the SST-916, since a loose socket rounds the hex. Seat the tool fully over the connector inside the shield before turning, and when the connector has to be torqued, drive the tool with a torque wrench set to the connector maker's figure rather than by hand; a shielded connector is one you won't be back to check, so the torque has to be right the first time, and the loop is for breaking a tight one loose, not for final tightening. Confirm the shield or sleeve has locked onto the connector before you leave the port. Black oxide resists rust but doesn't prevent it; wipe the tool dry if it's been outside. Tap ports on a powered plant can be live; check before working at the tap.
