Four slam lock patterns cover most of the outdoor pedestals a technician meets, and the Jonard Tools SSK-876 Star Key Can Wrench Kit opens all four plus the 7/16 in hex fastener on the lid. The SSK-716 can wrench has a 7/16 in hex socket on each end, 1-1/2 in (38.1 mm) deep, on a 7/8 in handle, and two slam lock star keys come with it: the SSK-85 for LB (8-point star) and LS (5-point star) locks, and the SSK-75 for LC (7-point star) and LG (flower pattern) locks. The SSK-716 also drives Jonard's other SSK star key inserts, so one handle covers the pedestals you run into most and takes the next key when a new pattern shows up on the route. Good to Know

Pedestal keys are tools for authorized access, and a pedestal belongs to the carrier or the utility whose name is on it; carry the kit on the strength of the work order. Count the points on the lock before you choose the key: 8 points is LB and 5 is LS, both on the SSK-85; 7 points is LC and a flower pattern is LG, both on the SSK-75; a pattern that isn't one of those takes a different SSK star key insert, which this wrench will drive once you have it. Seat the key or the socket fully before turning, and turn with steady pressure; a slam lock that won't turn is usually the wrong pattern or a seized lock, and forcing it rounds the key. On the hex sockets, 1-1/2 in of depth is there for a bolt that stands proud of the lid, so push the socket down over the bolt until it bottoms before applying torque. Close and lock every pedestal you open; a slam lock latches on closing, so check it has caught, and don't leave the key in it. Keep the wrench and both keys together, since a wrench without a key opens nothing, and mark the keys so the right one comes out of the pouch first. Many pedestal lids also use a 216 can wrench, a security bit, or a P lock, so this kit is most of a pedestal tool set rather than all of it.
