An outdoor pedestal is usually two locks: a 7/16 in hex bolt that holds the lid and a slam lock underneath it that takes a star key. The Jonard Tools SSK-750 is the kit that opens both. The SSK-716 Star Key Can Wrench has a 7/16 in hex socket at each end, 1-1/2 in deep, for the hex bolts on enclosures that use them, and it drives any of Jonard's SSK star keys, from the SSK-60 through the SSK-90, as well as the SSK-90 P key insert; the SSK-75 Slam Lock Star Key that comes in the kit fits LC and LG pattern slam locks. One wrench, one key, and the pedestal is open, with the wrench ready to take whichever other star key the next pedestal on the route calls for. It's covered by Jonard's lifetime warranty.

Good to Know

Pedestal keys are tools for authorized access, and a pedestal belongs to the carrier or the utility whose name is on it; carry the kit on the strength of the work order. Match the lock before you choose the key: the SSK-75 fits LC and LG pattern slam locks, and a slam lock of another pattern takes a different SSK star key, which this wrench will drive once you have it. Seat the key or the socket fully before turning, and turn with steady pressure; a slam lock that won't turn is usually the wrong pattern or a seized lock, and forcing it rounds the key. On the hex sockets, 1-1/2 in of depth is there for a bolt that stands proud of the lid, so push the socket down over the bolt until it bottoms before applying torque. Close and lock every pedestal you open; a slam lock latches on closing, so check it has caught, and don't leave the key in it. Keep the wrench and the keys together, since a wrench without a key opens nothing. Many pedestal lids also use a 216 can wrench, a security bit, or a P lock, so this kit is one part of a pedestal tool set rather than the whole set.
