This is a snagless slip-on boot for an RJ45 plug on Cat5e or Cat6 cable. It slides onto the cable before the plug is crimped, then pushes up over the plug, where it covers the latch so the plug doesn't snag when the cord is pulled through a bundle, takes the strain off the crimp when the cord is tugged, and keeps dust out of the back of the plug. It's flexible PVC with a 5.8 mm wire insert, sized for solid or stranded round unshielded cable up to 6.0 mm OD, which covers most Cat5e and Cat6 patch cable, and it comes in seven colors so a cord can be coded by its job. It's the finishing piece for a custom-length patch cord, and the one that turns a bare crimped plug into something that looks and lasts like a factory cord.

Features

  • Snagless. Covers the RJ45 latch so the plug pulls through bundles and panels without catching.
  • Strain relief. Takes the pull off the crimp at the back of the plug.
  • For Cat5e and Cat6 cable up to 6.0 mm OD. Solid or stranded round cable; 5.8 mm (0.23 in) wire insert.
  • Flexible PVC. 80P PVC, 26.4 × 14.5 × 7.8 mm.
  • Seven colors. Black, blue, gray, green, orange, red, and yellow.

Where It Fits

It suits anyone making custom-length Cat5e or Cat6 patch cords and wanting them to look and hold up like the ones from the box, data center and network techs who color-code cords by VLAN, uplink, or customer and need boots to match, structured cabling crews finishing a rack of jumpers so none of them snags on the way through a cable manager, AV and lab benches where cords are plugged and unplugged all day, anyone who has snapped a latch pulling a bare plug out of a bundle, and a job that already has the bulk Cat5e and Cat6, the RJ45 plugs, and the crimp tool from the copper collections. For slim cable under 3.9 mm, the PLG-R45-CT6SL plug takes a smaller boot; for shielded Cat6A up to 8 mm, the PLG-R45-CT6AS has its own optional boot.

Good to Know

The boot goes on the cable before the plug, every time; there's no putting it on afterward, and a crimped plug with no boot stays that way. Slide it on narrow end toward the cable, crimp the plug, then push the boot up until it seats over the back of the plug and the latch cover sits above the latch. Measure the cable first: the insert is 5.8 mm and the boot is rated for cable up to 6.0 mm, so a thick-jacketed Cat6 or any shielded cable will be a hard push or won't go, and a slim 28 AWG cable will rattle in it. The latch cover makes the plug snagless but also means the latch is pressed through the boot, which is stiffer in the cold; a cord that's hard to unplug in a chilly closet is the boot doing its job. Match the boot color to whatever color code the rack already uses, and buy a few more than the count of cords, since the one that goes on backward is the one you'll want to replace.
