Kevlar is the strength member in nearly every fiber cable and a good many copper ones, and it wrecks ordinary cutters: the aramid yarn slides off a plain blade or dulls it in a week. The Jonard Tools TK-325 is the shears made for it, the JIC-186, in a molded nylon pouch with a belt clip. The shears cut Kevlar, cable insulation, tape, cable ties, and the rest of what a cabling job throws at them, the pouch keeps the blades covered on your hip, and the clip comes off if you'd rather drop the pouch in a bag. It's covered by a lifetime warranty, and at this price it belongs on the belt of every fiber or cable technician who has ever reached for scissors and had the Kevlar fold.
What's in the Kit
- JIC-186 wire and Kevlar cutting shears. Cuts Kevlar, cable insulation, tape, cable ties, and other materials with ease.
- H-25 molded tool pouch. Durable molded nylon that keeps the shears safe and secure, with a removable belt clip that attaches to any belt.
Where It Fits
It suits fiber technicians cutting the strength member at every splice closure, terminal, and drop, network installers trimming the rip cord and aramid in hybrid and fiber-copper cable, telecom and alarm techs who want one cutter for Kevlar, jackets, ties, and tape, data center staff who open a fiber trunk now and then and don't want to ruin a good pair of scissors doing it, and anyone building a fiber kit a piece at a time, since these are the same shears in every Jonard fiber prep kit.
Good to Know
Keep the Kevlar to the base of the blades where the leverage is, and cut in one firm stroke rather than nibbling; aramid yarn that's half cut frays and gets harder to finish. The shears will cut the jacket, ties, and tape too, but they're not a wire cutter; keep them off solid copper and steel messenger, which nick the edge. Wipe the blades after a wet day and keep them in the pouch, since the edge that cuts Kevlar cleanly is the same edge that goes through a pocket lining. The pouch is sized for the shears alone, and the clip is removable, so the pouch rides on a belt, a gear loop, or in a bag as you like. For the shears with the three-hole fiber stripper beside them, the TK-350 and TK-355 kits add the stripper in a two-pocket pouch.
