Corning RocketRibbon cable packs thousands of fibers in a sheath that's thinner than its fiber count suggests, which makes a general-purpose slitter a risky way in. The Jonard Tools MS-836 is a mid-span slit and ring tool cut specifically for RocketRibbon, with four precision slitting grooves on one side and four precision ring grooves on the other, each sized to a RocketRibbon diameter: 11.6 to 12.0 mm, 14.5 to 14.9 mm, 16.8 to 17.2 mm, and 22.2 to 22.6 mm. Seat the cable in the matching groove and the blade depth is right for that sheath; an indicator line on top of the tool shows where the blade sits, so the ring cut lands where you marked it and the slit runs where you want it. It weighs under 0.69 lb (311 g), has a tethering hole for a lanyard, and its blades last 5,000 slits or rings before a replacement set (MS-836RB) goes in.

Good to Know

Measure the cable's outside diameter and pick the groove it falls in; the ranges are narrow on purpose, and a cable that doesn't match a groove isn't a cable this tool was cut for. For a mid-span entry, make the two ring cuts first with the ring side, using the indicator line to put the blade on your mark, then turn the tool over and slit between them with the slit side; peel the sheath in sections and watch the ribbons underneath, which are what you're protecting. Keep the tool square to the cable on the slit so the cut runs straight rather than spiraling, and don't press harder than the groove needs, since the depth is set by the groove and extra force only flexes the cable into the blade. RocketRibbon's sheath can hide a water-blocking layer and a ripcord; use the ripcord for the long peel where the cable has one, and the slitter for the entry. Count the cuts: at 5,000 slits or rings the blades are due, and a blade that starts to drag or tear is due sooner. Fit the MS-836RB set rather than running on a dull edge, which is when a blade wanders into the ribbons. Tether the tool when working in a vault or on a ladder.
