RG6 Dual Shield Plenum Cable CMP - 18 AWG CCS, Fire-Rated, 1000ft White

In an office, school, hospital, or store, the space above the drop ceiling is usually a return-air plenum, and any cable that runs through it without conduit has to be plenum rated. This is the everyday RG6 for those buildings: an 18 AWG copper-clad steel center conductor in a foam FEP dielectric, a bonded aluminum foil and a 75% aluminum braid, rated to 3 GHz for cable TV, satellite, DOCSIS, and MoCA, under a low-smoke CMP jacket listed for return-air plenums, drop ceilings, and raised floors under NEC Article 800. The 75% braid gives it more coverage than the 60% braid on a standard dual shield, which is worth having in a ceiling space shared with ballasts and HVAC equipment.

The dielectric is foam FEP, the fluoropolymer that plenum coax uses because it doesn't feed a fire or give off dense smoke, and it holds its impedance across a wider temperature range than polyethylene. It comes on a 1000 ft wooden spool, in white.

• 1000 ft wooden spool, white. Enough for a floor of drops, in the color that disappears against ceiling tile and wall; put it on a spool stand and it pays out cleanly.

Where It Fits

It suits CATV and broadband distribution through the ceiling space in offices, hotels, hospitals, schools, and retail, DOCSIS and MoCA backbones in multi-tenant buildings, satellite and antenna downleads routed through an air-return space, HD-over-coax camera feeds in a plenum ceiling, head-end and equipment room connections that cross a raised floor, and any plenum-space coax run where a quad shield would be more than the environment calls for.

Good to Know

Plenum cable is stiffer than PVC and the FEP dielectric doesn't like a tight bend, so give it a generous radius and pull from a spool on a stand rather than off the end of the reel. Plenum-rated cable is for the air-handling space, not for inside the ductwork itself, which the NEC doesn't allow for any communications cable. The jacket isn't UV stabilized, so a run that continues outside should transition to an outdoor-rated cable at the wall. Copper-clad steel is fine for RF and for the low DC currents of a satellite LNB, but if a run has to power an amplifier over a long distance, a solid-copper RG6 has about a quarter the resistance. Use compression F connectors sized for RG6 dual shield; the 0.230 in jacket is standard RG6, so no special connectors are needed. For a ceiling shared with VFDs, large motors, or broadcast equipment, the quad-shield plenum has a second foil and braid; if the ceiling isn't a plenum at all, a CMR RG6 does the same job for a lot less.
