A connector or a nut in a crowded enclosure gives a wrench a few degrees of swing per stroke, and a plain combination wrench spends most of the job being lifted off and reset. The Jonard Tools ASW-R12 is a 1/2 in ratcheting speed wrench built to skip that: the patented speed head on the open end gets onto a connector, nut, or bolt where there's little room to approach it, and the ratcheting box end on the other side has 12 points of contact, so it turns in a short arc and grips the hex for maximum torque without rounding it. The wrench is chrome vanadium steel with a polished chrome plating, 7 in long and under a quarter pound, which is the size that lives in a pouch rather than a toolbox.

Features

  • Patented speed head. Easy access to connectors, nuts, and bolts in tight spaces.
  • 12-point ratcheting box end. Twelve points of contact for maximum torque in a short swing.
  • 1/2 in size. For 1/2 in connectors, nuts, and bolts.
  • Chrome vanadium steel, chrome plated. Maximum strength and durability, with a polished chrome finish.

Where It Fits

It suits CATV and broadband technicians tightening 1/2 in hardware at the tap, the ground block, and the house box, tower and wireless crews working connector nuts and mounting hardware on a crowded pipe mount, telecom and data center techs fastening 1/2 in nuts and bolts inside a cabinet or behind a rack rail, electricians and low-voltage installers who need one wrench that reaches and one that ratchets on the same tool, anyone who has spent a minute on a bolt that should have taken ten seconds because the wrench kept coming off, and a pouch that already has the TWAF-71630 torque wrench for the F connectors that need a set torque. For the 7/16 in F-connector hex, the torque wrench is the right tool; this one is for the 1/2 in hardware around it.

Good to Know

Match the wrench to the hex: 1/2 in is 1/2 in, and a 7/16 in F connector or a 13 mm nut needs its own wrench, since a loose fit rounds the corners even with 12 points. Use the box end for torque and the speed head for getting on and off and for the first and last turns; the box end's 12 points grip best when the wrench is fully seated and square to the fastener, so push it on before you pull. A ratchet turns one way at a time, so flip the wrench over to change direction, and don't extend the handle with a pipe; 7 in of chrome vanadium is sized for the torque a 1/2 in fastener wants, and more than that strips the thread or the ratchet. It's a wrench, not a torque wrench; a connector with a torque spec, which is most RF and coax connectors, gets final tightening with a torque wrench set to the maker's figure. Chrome plating resists rust but flakes if the wrench is used as a hammer or a pry, so don't. Keep the ratchet clean and give it a drop of light oil now and then, and wipe the tool dry after a wet job. Tap ports on a powered plant can be live; check before working at the tap.
