Getting into a large duct or a heavy cable at mid-span means cutting a window in a wall that can be 5 mm thick, and a knife deep enough for that is a knife with no control. The Jonard Tools RCS-30 is a ratcheting slitter built for that cut on ducts and cables over 25 mm in diameter: fixed jaws grip the cable or the duct, the ratchet closes the blade into the wall a click at a time, and a replaceable double-ended blade with an adjustable depth of 0 to 5 mm cuts exactly as deep as you set it and no deeper. It makes the ring cut, the lengthwise slit, and the window cut that a mid-span entry needs, on PVC, PE, rubber, and other jacket materials, and a 10, 20, 30 mm ruler on the tool measures the slit length without a tape. It's the large-cable tool in Jonard's TK-107B, TK-199B, and TK-260 kits, sold here on its own.

Good to Know

Set the blade depth to the wall before the first cut: measure the jacket or the duct wall on a scrap or at the cut end, set the depth a touch under it, and add depth a click at a time until the blade just breaks through, since the aim is to cut the wall and nothing underneath. For a window in a duct, make the two ring cuts first, then the two lengthwise slits between them, and lift the panel out; for a mid-span entry on cable, ring, slit, and peel the jacket in sections, watching for the buffer tubes or the conductors as the panel lifts. Use the ruler on the tool to set the window length, and keep the tool square to the cable on the slit so the cut runs straight rather than spiraling. The ratchet means the blade goes in under control; let it do the work rather than forcing the handles, which is what breaks a blade or wanders into the core. The blade is double-ended, so when one end dulls, reverse it, and replace it when both are gone; a blade that tears rather than cuts is the sign. The tool is for cable and duct over 25 mm; below that, the MS-series mid-span tools and the FOR-3000 cover 1.2 to 19 mm, and for armored cable the AST-200 CableSaber is the tool. Cut duct and heavy jacket edges are sharp; wear gloves on the peel.
