Threading a 250 µm fiber into the hole of a splice protection sleeve is one of those jobs that looks trivial and isn't: the fiber is nearly invisible, the hole is barely bigger, and in a closure or on a pole with cold hands it can take longer than the splice itself. The Jonard Tools PSI-15 Quick Sleever is a small loader that takes the aiming out of it. Fifteen protection sleeves from 40 to 60 mm long stack in the tool, a conical feed surface guides the fiber straight into the sleeve's hole, and when a loaded sleeve is pulled off, the next one drops into place. It's 2.6 in long and under an ounce, so it rides in a splice kit, and it's as much help to a technician with tired or poor eyesight as to one working in bad light.

Where It Fits

It suits fusion splicing technicians who load a sleeve onto every fiber before every splice and would rather not fight the hole each time, FTTH crews splicing drops at terminals and in customer premises where the light is bad and the hands are cold, high-count splicing jobs in a closure or a tray where a few seconds saved per fiber adds up to an hour, technicians with poor eyesight or a tremor for whom the bare-hands method has become nearly impossible, and training programs where new splicers lose more time to the sleeve than to the splicer.

Good to Know

Load the sleeves before you start, with the sleeve lengths your splicer's heater is set for, and the tool will feed one per fiber for the next fifteen splices. The sequence is strip, clean, sleeve, cleave: slide the sleeve on with the Quick Sleever before cleaving, then push it well back along the fiber and out of the way, since a sleeve that creeps toward the cleaved end contaminates it. After the splice, slide the sleeve over the joint, center it, and shrink it in the heater as usual; the loader only changes how the sleeve gets onto the fiber, not how it's used. The tool takes sleeves from 40 to 60 mm, which covers the standard 40, 45, and 60 mm lengths; check the length before you load fifteen of a size the tool won't hold. It works on bare 250 µm fiber and on 900 µm tight-buffered fiber as long as the sleeve's inner tube is sized for it. Keep the feed surface clean; coating dust in the cone is what makes a fiber catch. At this price it's a one-per-splicer tool, and a second one loaded with the other sleeve length saves reloading.
