The Jonard Tools PT-100 is a coax toner that fits in a shirt pocket. Push it onto a drop at one end of an MDU and it puts a loud tone on the line so you can find the other end at the splitter, the ground block, or the headend, on runs up to 5,000 ft. Its LED does the diagnostic work: it lights to show a splitter, a DC short, or a self-grounding device somewhere in the run, which is usually the answer to why a drop isn't passing signal. A right-angle male push-on connector gets it onto a port in a crowded box, and a female push-on connector on the other end lets you tone a run quickly from a cable end. It's ETL Listed, runs on one AAA battery that comes in the box, clips to a pocket, and weighs an ounce and a half. For lines that may carry voltage, the PT-300 is the same tool with protection up to 52 V.

Good to Know

This tester has no voltage protection: it's for dead coax. A satellite drop carrying LNB voltage, a MoCA or amplifier run with power on the center conductor, or any line that may be energized is a job for the PT-300, which adds protection up to 52 V, and connecting the PT-100 to a powered line can damage it. The LED reads what's in the run, not where: a lit indicator says there's a splitter, a short, or a self-grounding device between the toner and the far end, and a tone probe or a walk of the run finds it. Toning goes one way; put the PT-100 on the far end and listen at the near end, and when two drops both carry tone, separate them and tone again, since a splitter passes tone down every leg. The push-on connectors are the point of the tool, letting you tone a dozen ports in the time it takes to thread one, but a push-on fitting makes a lighter contact than a threaded one, so a weak or intermittent tone is worth a second push before you blame the cable. It runs on one AAA cell, included, and the speaker is a replaceable part, so a toner that's gone quiet after years of service needs a PT-350, not a replacement.
