A single-position punch-down tool terminates a 110 block one conductor at a time, eight strokes for every four-pair cable. The Jonard Tools MPD-4 does all eight in one. Its four-pair head seats and cuts four pairs of VDV cable on a 110-style block in a single punch, with more force behind it than a normal punch-down tool so that every conductor seats fully even on a densely loaded block. It takes 22 to 28 AWG solid or stranded conductors with single insulation, which includes the 23 AWG conductors in Cat6A, and the head is good for more than 30,000 punches before it needs replacing. On a patch panel or a 110 cross-connect with dozens of cables to land, it turns a long afternoon of individual strokes into one punch per cable.

Good to Know

This is a 110 tool only: the four-pair head is sized for the 110 contact pitch and won't fit a 66 block or a keystone jack, which still need a single-position tool with the right blade. Lay the four pairs into the block's slots in the right order before you punch, with the untwist as short as the block allows, because the tool terminates whatever is in the slots; a mislaid pair is cut and seated just as firmly as a correct one. Square the head to the block and hold it there through the punch, since a tilted head will seat one end of the row and leave the other proud. Single insulation means ordinary insulated conductors; a conductor with a second sheath over the insulation won't seat properly. The 30,000-punch head life is for the cutting blades; a head that starts leaving uncut tails or needs a second punch is telling you it's time for a new one. The tool seats conductors with a good deal of force, so keep fingers clear of the block face, and check the row with a quick visual after each punch: all eight tails cut, all eight conductors down to the same depth.
