The Jonard Tools MS-600 is the mid-span shaving tool for the smallest cables, with six precision grooves covering 1.0 to 3.3 mm in narrow bands: 1.0 to 1.4, 1.4 to 1.8, 1.8 to 2.1, 2.1 to 2.5, 2.5 to 2.9, and 2.9 to 3.3 mm. Seat the outer jacket or the loose buffer tube in the groove that matches it and the patented blade shaves a controlled, consistent strip of jacket, no deeper than the jacket, so the fiber inside is reached cleanly and fast. The tool is compact and light enough to work one-handed in the field, at 2 in and under three ounces, and it carries Jonard's lifetime warranty. Where It Fits

Good to Know

Measure the cable or the tube and pick the groove that matches, since each groove sets the blade depth for a narrow band of diameter; a cable in a groove one size too big won't be shaved through, and in a groove too small the blade reaches further than it should. Seat the cable fully in the groove, draw the tool along it in one steady pull to the length of window you need, and lift the strip of jacket off; stopping and restarting leaves a step in the cut, and tilting the tool changes the depth, which is the one thing the groove is there to control. Test on a scrap of the same cable before the first live shave. Shaving opens a window and leaves the fibers or the tubes underneath exposed, so make the window a little longer than the slack you need for the tap and watch the fibers as you lift the strip. The six grooves top out at 3.3 mm; a bigger cable needs the MS-316 or a larger MS-series tool, and a flat drop cable is a job for the FDS-312 or the FOD-2000. The window edges are sharp and the fibers in it are bare; gloves for the jacket, and no tools near the glass. The blade is covered for life, but a shave that starts to tear rather than cut is a blade that's done.
