Thick-walled fiber cable needs a deeper cut than a thin-jacket tool will make and a more controlled one than a knife will, and the Jonard Tools MS-426 is the mid-span slit and ring tool cut for it: jackets up to 2.0 mm thick on cable from 5.8 mm to 12 mm in diameter, and specifically Prysmian ESMF Optical Mini FlexTube cables and their Corning equivalents. It's a patented, award-winning design that adds a ring cut to Jonard's earlier MS-6 and MS-26 mid-span slitters, so one tool makes both cuts an entry needs. Four precision slitting grooves on one side and four precision ring grooves on the other are each sized to a narrow band of cable diameter, 5.8 to 6.4, 7.8 to 8.4, 9.8 to 10.4, and 11.2 to 12 mm, so the groove sets the blade depth for the jacket and there's nothing to adjust. An indicator line on top of the tool shows where the blade sits, so the ring lands on your mark and the slit runs where you want it. It weighs under 8 oz, has a tethering hole, and is backed by Jonard's lifetime warranty.

Good to Know

Measure the cable's outside diameter and match it to a groove; the bands are narrow and there are gaps between them (6.4 to 7.8, 8.4 to 9.8, and 10.4 to 11.2 mm), because the grooves are cut to specific Mini FlexTube and equivalent cable sizes rather than a continuous range. A cable that falls in a gap belongs to the MS-316 or the MS-326 if its jacket is thin, or to the MS-526 above 9.8 mm, not to the nearest groove on this tool. The depth is cut for jackets up to 2.0 mm; on a cable with a thinner jacket at the same diameter, this tool cuts too deep, which is the whole reason the MS-326 exists for thin-walled cable in the overlapping sizes. For a mid-span entry, make the two ring cuts first with the ring side, using the indicator line to put the blade on your mark, then turn the tool over and slit between them with the slit side; peel the jacket in sections and watch the flex tubes underneath. Keep the tool square to the cable on the slit so the cut runs straight rather than spiraling, and let the groove set the depth rather than pressing harder; a thick jacket takes a steady pull, not a hard one. Tether the tool when working in a vault or on a ladder. Above 12 mm the MS-526 covers 9.8 to 18.2 mm, and for armored cable the AST-200 CableSaber is the tool.
