Corning's MiniXtend HD 288 and 432 fiber cables put a lot of glass under a thin jacket, and opening that jacket with a tool cut for thicker sheath is how a mid-span entry turns into a restoration. The Jonard Tools MS-336 is the mid-span slit and ring tool cut specifically for those two cables: a patented extension of the MS-326 thin-wall tool, scaled up to the 7.9 to 11 mm sizes of MiniXtend HD 288F and 432F with FastAccess. Two precision slitting grooves on one side and two precision ring grooves on the other are sized to the two cables, 7.9 to 8.2 mm and 10.7 to 11.0 mm, so the groove sets the blade depth for the jacket and there's nothing to adjust. An indicator line on top of the tool shows where the blade sits, so the ring lands on your mark and the slit runs where you want it. The blades last at least 5,000 slits or cuts and replace with the MS-336RB set, and the tool is backed by Jonard's lifetime warranty.

Good to Know

This is a two-cable tool: the 7.9 to 8.2 mm groove is for MiniXtend HD 288F and the 10.7 to 11.0 mm groove for HD 432F, and a cable that doesn't measure into one of those bands isn't a cable this tool was cut for; check the diameter rather than using the nearest groove. For a mid-span entry, make the two ring cuts first with the ring side, using the indicator line to put the blade on your mark, then turn the tool over and slit between them with the slit side; on FastAccess cable the slit opens the jacket for the peel-away feature, and the fibers are right underneath, so keep the tool square and let the groove set the depth rather than pressing harder. Peel the jacket in sections and check the fibers and binders for scoring before you go further. Count the cuts: the blades are rated for at least 5,000, and a blade that starts to drag or tear is due sooner, so fit the MS-336RB set rather than running on a dull edge, which is when a blade wanders into the fibers. For the smaller MiniXtend sizes, 5 to 10 mm, the MS-326 is the companion tool; for standard thick-walled cable in the same diameters, the MS-426 or MS-526 is the right one, since their grooves are cut deeper for thicker jackets.
