Corning Altos loose tube cable with binderless FastAccess is built to open fast, but only if the jacket is cut to the right depth and nothing else is, and the Jonard Tools MS-526 is the mid-span slit and ring tool cut for it: a patented, award-winning design sized for Altos FastAccess cables and other similar thin-walled jackets from 9.8 mm to 18.2 mm in diameter, the largest range in the MS series. It adds a ring cut to Jonard's earlier MS-6 and MS-26 mid-span slitters, so one tool makes both cuts an entry needs. Four precision slitting grooves on one side and four precision ring grooves on the other are each sized to a narrow band of cable diameter, 9.8 to 10.2, 11.8 to 12.2, 15.4 to 15.8, and 17.8 to 18.2 mm, so the groove sets the blade depth for the jacket and there's nothing to adjust. An indicator line on top of the tool shows where the blade sits, so the ring lands on your mark and the slit runs where you want it. It weighs under 0.61 lb (277 g) and has a tethering hole.

Good to Know

Measure the cable's outside diameter and match it to a groove; the bands are narrow and there are gaps between them (10.2 to 11.8, 12.2 to 15.4, and 15.8 to 17.8 mm), because the grooves are cut to specific Altos cable sizes rather than a continuous range. A cable that falls in a gap isn't one this tool was cut for, and a thick-walled cable at the same diameter belongs to the MS-426 or MS-446, whose grooves are cut deeper; on a thin-walled Altos jacket those tools cut into the tubes, and on a thick jacket this one doesn't get through, which is the whole reason the series has both. For a mid-span entry, make the two ring cuts first with the ring side, using the indicator line to put the blade on your mark, then turn the tool over and slit between them with the slit side; on FastAccess cable the slit opens the jacket for the peel-away feature, and the buffer tubes are right underneath, so keep the tool square and let the groove set the depth rather than pressing harder. Peel the jacket in sections and check the tubes for scoring before you open them, then ring the tubes with a buffer tube ringer such as the BTR-6 rather than this tool. Replace the blades when they start to drag or tear rather than cut; a dull blade is when one wanders into the tubes. Tether the tool when working in a vault or on a ladder. For armored Altos or any armored cable, the AST-200 CableSaber is the tool; the MS-526 is for jackets, not armor.
