An F connector tightened by hand ends up at one to three inch-pounds, which is loose enough to work free, let signal leak, and bring a truck back out; a wrench on the back of a set-top box ends up stripping the port. The Jonard Tools TT-812 is a low-torque termination tool for the connectors on consumer equipment: a 7/16 in full-head socket, 1-3/8 in tall and 7/8 in across, that tightens an F connector to 8 to 12 in-lb and no further, whoever is holding it. It's molded from glass-filled nylon that work-hardens with use, so the torque it applies doesn't fall off over hundreds of connectors, and at two-tenths of an ounce it rides in a shirt pocket. It's for indoor work, at the modem, the set-top box, the TV, and the wall plate, where a 30 in-lb outdoor wrench is too much and fingers are too little.

Good to Know

Thread the connector on by hand until it stops, then put the tool over it and turn until the tool slips; that slip is the torque limit, and turning past it does nothing but wear the tool. Don't use the tool to start a cross-threaded connector, and don't use it on the outdoor connections at the ground block, the splitter, or the tap, which want 30 in-lb and a torque wrench rated for it; 8 to 12 in-lb is right for the ports on consumer equipment and too little for a weatherproof outdoor fitting. The glass-filled nylon work-hardens, which means the tool gets no looser with use, but it isn't indestructible: a cracked or deformed socket won't hold its torque and should be replaced, which the price makes easy. The tool fits 7/16 in hex F connectors; a connector with a different hex, or a push-on, isn't a job for it. Keep the connector and the port clean before tightening, since a bit of grit under the nut is a loose connection no torque fixes. Confirm the drop isn't carrying power before working on it.
