Lineman's pliers earn their keep on the cuts that would ruin an ordinary plier: a bolt, a nail, a run of ACSR, a length of high-strength wire. The Jonard Tools JIC-683 is a 9-1/2 in heavy-duty side cut plier built for that work, with a high-leverage design that puts the hand's force where the 13/16 in cutter meets the material, so the hard cuts go through without a second bite. Cross-hatched knurled jaws keep a tight grip on wire and parts for twisting and pulling, and the rivet keeps the jaws moving smoothly with no side-play, which is what keeps the cutting edges meeting cleanly after years of use. The jaws are heat-treated chrome vanadium steel with induction-hardened cutting edges, and the handles are dipped in plastic about 0.07 in thick to add comfort and take the sting out of a hard cut. Good to Know

The cutter is rated for bolts, nails, ACSR, and high-strength wire, but hardened steel is still the exception rather than the rule: a hardened bolt, a spring, or piano wire can chip even an induction-hardened edge, so cut hard material square in the throat of the jaw, close to the pivot, where the leverage is highest and the edge is thickest, and never with the tips. Cut steel with the jaw angled so the clipped end flies away from you, and wear eye protection; a nail end leaves the jaw fast. The knurled jaws grip for twisting and pulling, which is what they're for, not for turning a nut, where they'll round it. The dipped handles are for comfort and vibration, not insulation, and this is not a rated insulated tool, so the circuit is dead before the pliers go in the box. Keep the rivet clean and give it a drop of oil now and then; chrome vanadium resists rust but doesn't ignore a wet truck bed. A cable cutter, not a plier, is the right tool for a copper or aluminum conductor you want to land in a lug without a crushed end.
