Pole hardware comes in four bolt sizes and the pole steps turn with a wrench of their own, and the Bell System answered that a long time ago with one wrench that does all of it. The Jonard Tools JIC-650 is that wrench, a 13 in Bell System type lineman's B wrench with two open ends and an oval hole: the large end takes 5/8 in and 3/4 in bolts, the small end takes 3/8 in and 1/2 in bolts and 1/2 in drive screw heads, all to NEMA standards, and the oval hole in the body turns a pole step in or out. The faces of the wrench openings are offset from the handle, which is what gives your knuckles clearance when the bolt is tight against the pole, a crossarm, or a bracket. At nearly two pounds it's the wrench on the belt for climbing and bucket work, where the hardware is NEMA and the tool has to be the right one the first time up.
Features
- Two open-ended heads. The large end fits 5/8 in and 3/4 in bolts; the small end fits 3/8 in and 1/2 in bolts and 1/2 in drive screw heads, all to NEMA standards.
- Oval pole-step hole. Turns pole steps in and out without a second tool.
- Offset faces. The wrench openings are offset to give the handle clearance on hardware set tight to a pole or bracket.
- Bell System type. The standard lineman's B wrench pattern for telecom and datacom plant.
Where It Fits
It suits telephone and cable linemen setting and pulling pole hardware, strand clamps, and crossarm bolts on climbing and bucket work, outside plant crews installing and removing detachable pole steps for a climb, broadband and fiber construction crews hanging strand, brackets, and extension arms with NEMA bolts, utility contractors working joint-use poles where the hardware is a mix of 3/8 in through 3/4 in, anyone who has climbed with three wrenches to find they needed a fourth, and a lineman's belt that already carries the JIC-683 side cut pliers and the WRC-14 wire rope cutter. For the F connectors and tap hardware at the other end of the drop, the ASW-716 and ASW-R12 speed wrenches are the small-hex tools; this one is for the pole.
Good to Know
Match the end to the bolt, 5/8 in and 3/4 in on the large head and 3/8 in and 1/2 in on the small, and seat the jaw fully on the hex before pulling; an open-end wrench half on a bolt rounds it, and NEMA hardware on a pole is hard to replace once it's rounded. Put the offset to use by turning the wrench over when the handle hits the pole; the offset faces are there to give a second approach angle, not to turn the bolt at an angle. Turn pole steps with the oval hole and nothing else, since pliers chew the step and a chewed step is a step that cuts a hand. Two pounds of wrench on a belt is two pounds that can fall, so clip it to a lanyard or a tool loop when you're aloft, and keep it on the belt rather than on the crossarm between bolts. It's a wrench, not a hammer or a pry bar; a seized bolt wants penetrating oil and a longer pull, not a bigger swing. Wipe the tool dry after a wet day, since it rides outside, and check the jaw faces for spread now and then, because a sprung open-end is one that rounds every bolt after. Pole work is work near power; the wrench conducts, and the clearances and rules that apply to the climb apply to the tool.
