OM4 is the multimode fiber to buy for anything new. It's the same 50 µm core as OM3 and plugs into the same ports and panels, but with more bandwidth, so 10GBASE-SR reaches 400 m instead of 300, 25 Gigabit reaches 100 m instead of 70, and the 40G and 100G duplex transceivers reach 150 m instead of 100. The price difference over OM3 on a patch cord is small, and it's the fiber that lets a rack built for 10G today take 25G and 100G later without re-cabling. This is the LC to LC version, the cord for every SFP+, SFP28, and duplex QSFP, and for the panels and cassettes that face them.

It's a duplex zipcord, two 50/125 µm fibers in a 1.8 × 3.7 mm jacket, in lengths from a 0.5 m rack jumper to a 50 m run. Each cord is tested for insertion and return loss and the end-faces are checked by interferometer before it ships.

Where It Fits

It suits top-of-rack switch to server and storage links at 10G and 25G, SFP+ and SFP28 uplinks between switches, routers, and firewalls, 40G and 100G BiDi and SWDM links between leaf and spine, switch-to-patch-panel and panel-to-panel jumpers in a 50 µm plant, SAN and Fibre Channel links at 16G, 32G, and 64G, building backbones and links between floors at 10 Gigabit, and any multimode link between two LC ports, from a 0.5 m jumper inside a rack to a 50 m run across a data hall.

Good to Know

Match the fiber, not just the connectors. OM4 and OM3 are both 50 µm and mix freely at the distances a patch cord covers, though a link is only as good as its weakest fiber, so an OM4 cord on an OM3 backbone gets OM3 distances. OM1 is 62.5 µm and doesn't mix; on an orange 62.5 µm plant use the OM1 cord instead. 40G and 100G over a duplex LC cord means BiDi or SWDM transceivers; standard 40GBASE-SR4 and 100GBASE-SR4 use MPO cords, not this one. For anything beyond 400 m at 10G or 150 m at 100G, go single-mode. Use multimode SR transceivers; a single-mode LR module won't light a multimode link reliably. Keep dust caps on until the moment you plug in, and clean both the connector and the port with a 1.25 mm one-click cleaner before mating. If the panel end is SC or ST rather than LC, or the plant is OM3 and you'd rather match it, the OM3 cords cover the same connector pairs.
