Electrician's scissors and a cable knife go dull on Kevlar and jacket, and a dull edge tears instead of cutting. The Jonard Tools KSS-1 is a pocket sharpener for both: one slot for knives and one for scissors, each with diamond-polished high-grade tungsten carbide steel blades that restore an edge in three or four strokes rather than a session at a stone. A safety guard keeps fingers clear of the blade being sharpened, the handle is plastic, and at 4 in tall and an ounce it rides in the pouch next to the scissors it keeps sharp. It's the tool that puts the edge back on the ES-1964 scissors and the KN-200INS sheathing knife on the truck instead of on the bench.

Good to Know

Use the knife slot for knives and the scissor slot for scissors; the two are ground at different angles, and a scissor pulled through the knife slot comes out with the wrong bevel. Draw the blade through from heel to tip with light, even pressure, three or four strokes, and stop when it's sharp; carbide removes steel quickly, and more strokes shorten the blade's life without making it sharper. Sharpen only the plain blade of a serrated electrician's scissor, since a pass through the slot takes the serrations off the other one and with them the grip on the wire. Carbide sharpeners work on plain steel knives and scissors; they're not for the hardened jaws of diagonal cutters, flush cutters, or lineman's pliers, which are ground to meet and would be ruined by a hand sharpener, and not for ceramic blades. Keep the finger guard between your hand and the edge, pull the blade away from your body, and sharpen a dry, clean blade so grit doesn't ride through the slot. Wipe the carbide inserts out now and then; steel filings pack into the slot and the strokes stop cutting.
