A cleaved fiber end is a sliver of glass too small to see and sharp enough to go into an eye, and it leaves the cleaver with some speed. The Jonard Tools SG-5 are safety glasses made for that work and for any other job where eye protection is needed: lenses that comply with ANSI Z87.1, CE, and EN166 Class 1, in a lightweight plastic frame that's comfortable enough to leave on for a full day of splicing or terminating. The anti-fogging design lets the lenses breathe so they don't cloud over in a hot closet or a cold vault, and soft plastic nose pieces keep the glasses from sliding down when you're bent over a splice tray. At an ounce, they go in the fiber kit and stay there.

Good to Know

Put them on before the cleave, not after; a fiber shard travels, and the scrap goes in a closed container rather than the floor. The Z87.1 rating means the lenses have passed impact testing, and the frame is part of that, so a pair with a cracked lens or a loose temple is retired rather than kept as a spare. Anti-fog lenses still fog if they're filthy, so clean them with water or a lens cleaner and a soft cloth, never a dry shop rag or a solvent, which scratch and craze plastic. The nose pieces and the light frame are what make them wearable all day, but they're safety glasses, not goggles; for grinding, chemical splash, or heavy dust the job calls for sealed eye protection. Keep them in the kit's case or a soft pouch, since a pair loose in a tool bag comes out scratched, and a scratched lens is one you'll take off when you shouldn't. If you wear prescription glasses, these go over or they don't, so check the fit before relying on them.
