Between the small cutter in the pouch and the ratcheting cutter in the truck is the cable that takes real hand force: 2/0 copper feeders, 4/0 aluminum service conductor, and 100-pair telephone cable. A cutter that struggles with it leaves a mangled end that has to be cut again. The Jonard Tools JIC-63050 is a 9-1/4 in high leverage cable cutter for that range, with a shear-type jaw and long handles that get through up to 2/0 soft copper, 4/0 aluminum, or 100-pair 24 AWG cable in one steady stroke. The jaws are chrome vanadium steel with induction-hardened cutting edges, the jaw opening is 13/16 in (20.64 mm), and dipped plastic grips give comfort and torque on the pull. It's for copper and aluminum only, not steel or ACSR, and it's backed by Jonard's lifetime warranty.
Features
- 2/0 copper, 4/0 aluminum, 100-pair cable. A shear-type jaw that cuts cleanly through soft copper to 2/0, aluminum to 4/0, and 100-pair 24 AWG communications cable.
- High leverage design. Long handles for superior cutting ability with less hand effort.
- Chrome vanadium steel, induction-hardened edges. Strength in the jaws, long life at the cutting edge.
- 13/16 in jaw opening. 20.64 mm, with a 1-3/8 in jaw length and 1/2 in jaw thickness.
- Dipped plastic grips. Comfort and torque on the long handles.
- Copper and aluminum only. Not for steel or ACSR cable.
- Lifetime warranty.
Where It Fits
It suits electricians cutting 2/0 copper and 4/0 aluminum feeders and service conductor at the panel and the meter, telecom technicians cutting 25-, 50-, and 100-pair cable at the block and the splice case, low-voltage installers who meet a bundle of twisted pair or a large multi-conductor control cable that the pocket cutter won't close on, solar installers cutting the larger copper and aluminum conductors on the DC and AC sides, anyone who has tried to cut 4/0 with side cutters and a knee, and a truck that wants a one-pound cutter for the mid-size cable without stepping up to a ratcheting tool. For 250 MCM and up, the RC-500 and RC-600 ratcheting cutters take over; for steel-reinforced conductor, the RC-336ACSR; for coax and small copper, the JIC-625 and JIC-725.
Good to Know
The three capacities are different because the materials are: 2/0 is the copper limit and 4/0 the aluminum limit, and a 100-pair cable is rated by its diameter fitting the 13/16 in jaw opening, not by its conductor count. Set the cable square in the open jaws, fully seated, and close the handles in one steady stroke; a cut in two bites or with the cable at an angle leaves a step on the end, and a cable that won't seat in the opening is over the rating. The high leverage comes from the long handles, which also means the handles open wide; keep the second hand clear of the jaws and the pivot. The tool is for copper and aluminum only; ACSR, steel messenger, guy strand, armored cable, screws, and anything with a steel core will notch the induction-hardened edge, and the sheet says so in plain words. Expect the strands at the cut end to be slightly displaced on a large stranded conductor, which is normal for a shearing cut and dresses out before the lug goes on; a crushed end means the cable was over the capacity or the cut was forced in stages. Wipe aluminum smear off the blades after cutting aluminum, and a wipe of oil on the pivot now and then keeps the action smooth. Confirm the conductor is de-energized before cutting; the dipped grips are for comfort and torque, not insulation.
