Every pouch has a utility knife in it, and most of them are the ones that rattle, need a screwdriver to change the blade, and lose the spares. The Jonard Tools UKN-3 is the heavy-duty version: a die-cast zinc alloy housing that's light in the hand and takes the abuse of a jobsite, a push button that swaps the blade with no other tool, a blade that locks in four positions so you can use a fresh corner or a short reach without a full extension, and a compartment inside the handle for up to three spare blades. A tethering hole at the bottom of the handle takes a lanyard for ladder and lift work. It takes most standard utility knife blades, so you're not tied to one brand of refill, and it comes with one blade installed.
Features
- Tool-free blade change. A push button releases the blade; no screwdriver, no coin.
- Die-cast zinc alloy housing. Lightweight, with the durability of a metal body rather than a plastic one.
- Four-position blade lock. Lock the blade at the depth the cut needs.
- Spare blade storage. Holds up to three extra blades inside the housing (spares not included).
- Tethering hole. At the bottom of the handle, for a lanyard.
- Standard blades. Compatible with most standard utility knife blades.
- One blade included.
Where It Fits
It suits low-voltage and network technicians opening cartons, trimming jacket, and cutting cable ties and Velcro all day, electricians and HVAC technicians who want a metal-bodied knife that survives the bottom of the bag, telecom and tower crews who tether every tool and need the hole to do it, anyone who's run out of blades on a job because the spares were in the truck, and a kit or a drawer that needs a dependable knife at a price where one lives in every pouch. For fiber jacket and Kevlar®, the JIC-190 flush cutters and the Jonard slitters are the right tools; the knife is for everything else.
Good to Know
Set the blade depth to the cut: a short extension for cardboard and tape keeps the blade from reaching what's inside the box, and the full extension is for drywall and thick material. Cut away from your body and your other hand, and don't use the knife on cable you intend to keep, since a utility blade in a cable jacket is how a conductor or a fiber gets nicked; a jacket stripper or a slitter is the tool for that. Change the blade when it starts to tear rather than slice, because a dull blade takes more force and more force is how a knife slips. Load the spares into the housing when you set the knife up, so a fresh blade is a push button away instead of a trip to the truck, and keep used blades out of the pocket and the bag. Lock the blade fully retracted before it goes back in a pouch, and tether it on a ladder or a lift; the hole is there for that. Standard utility blades fit, but check an unusual blade type (hook, serrated, snap-off) in the housing before you buy a box of them.
