Electrician's scissors are sized for 24 AWG; the job isn't always. The Jonard Tools JIC-183 Heavy Duty Scissors are an 8 in scissor for the cuts that are too much for the small pair: copper, aluminum, leather, plastic, and other materials, with a cable cutter notch in the blade that takes a cable up to 1/4 in in diameter. One blade is serrated, so the material stays put instead of sliding out of the cut, and a multi-gauge wire stripper in the blades handles 18, 14, and 12 AWG, so a conductor gets stripped without switching tools. The blades are stainless steel, the dual-component polypropylene and thermoplastic rubber handle fits either hand, a safety lock keeps the scissors closed in the bag, and an adjustment screw sets the blade tension to suit. They're built for copper, aluminum, and softer materials, not for stainless steel or other hardened or heat-treated metals. Lifetime warranty.
Features
- Serrated blade. Holds the material in place for a tight, secure grip while cutting.
- Cable cutter notch. Cuts cables up to 1/4 in (6.35 mm) in diameter.
- Built-in wire stripper. Strips 12 AWG, 14 AWG, and 18 AWG (2.0, 1.5, and 1.0 mm²) wire.
- Stainless steel blades. For copper, aluminum, leather, plastic, and other materials.
- Dual-component PP and TPR grip. Comfortable in either hand.
- Safety lock and adjustment screw. Keeps the blades closed in the bag and tensioned to your preference.
- Lifetime warranty.
Where It Fits
It suits electricians stripping 12 and 14 AWG branch-circuit conductors and cutting NM cable sheath, structured cabling and low-voltage installers cutting Cat6, coax, and speaker cable to length at the pull point, AV and security techs trimming cable jackets, zip ties, and pull string in one pair, controls and HVAC techs working 18 AWG thermostat and control wire, anyone cutting leather, rubber, plastic sheet, or gasket material on a job site, left-handed techs who are tired of right-handed scissors, and a bag that already has the ES-1964 or ES-1964ERG for the fine cuts and the JIC-500 cable cutter for anything over 1/4 in. For 18 to 24 AWG at a block, the electrician's scissors; for solid conductors heavier than 12 AWG, the JIC-683 lineman's pliers.
Good to Know
The blades are stainless, and the scissors still aren't for cutting stainless; stainless steel, hardened wire, springs, screws, and heat-treated metal chip the edge, and the sheet says so plainly. Cut cable in the notch, not between the blades, since the notch keeps a round cable from rolling and 1/4 in is the limit; a cable that won't seat in the notch belongs in the JIC-500. Use the serrated blade against the work so the serrations hold it, and pick the stripping hole by the conductor, 12, 14, or 18 AWG, closing the blades on the insulation and pulling the wire straight out. Set the adjustment screw so the blades close smoothly without play, since a loose pivot leaves a burr and a tight one tires the hand, and engage the safety lock before the scissors go in the bag. The handle is for comfort, not insulation, and the steel conducts, so the circuit is dead before the scissors go in the box. Stainless resists rust, but the pivot and the screw still want a drop of oil now and then.
