QR540 is a Quantum Reach cable, and its .540 in (13.72 mm) outer conductor and dielectric don't match a .500 tool; a coring bit sized for 500-series hardline either won't enter or cores it oversize. The Jonard Tools HSC-540QR Hardline Strip and Core Tool is sized for QR540 specifically, for the day a QR540 cable has to be terminated, replaced, or given a new connector. Check the cable marking before the tool goes on: QR540 is .540 in over the outer conductor, and this tool is sized for that and not for .500 (P3, T10) or .625, which have their own tools, so a cable that doesn't enter the bit cleanly is the wrong cable, not a dull bit. Start with a square cut end from a banana cutter; a crushed or angled end won't start in the coring bit. Insert the cable, work the ratcheting handles in a steady motion without forcing them, and let the bit do the coring; pushing hard loads the center conductor and is what scores it. After the prep, inspect the center conductor for a smooth finish and no scoring, the outer conductor for burrs, and the core for dielectric left behind, which keeps the connector from seating and shows up later as an intermittent; a center conductor cleaner takes off the film the coring leaves. Confirm the finished dimensions against the QR540 connector's instructions, since connector makers differ. Change the blades when the cut starts to tear and the coring bit (HCB-540QR) when the core comes out rough. Hardline on a CATV plant carries AC power to amplifiers; confirm the line is dead before cutting or coring.
