A diagonal cutter leaves a little pyramid on the end of every wire it trims, and in a terminal block or a crowded panel that point is what snags the next conductor and pokes the next hand. The Jonard Tools JIC-2755 Flush Cut Pliers trim without the point: the cutting edges meet flat, so the wire ends level with the face of the jaw and there is nothing left to catch. Set the flat back of the jaw against the surface the wire should be trimmed to, squeeze, and the cantilevered spring opens the jaws for the next one, which is what makes a hundred cuts in a row go quickly. The jaws are high carbon SK5 steel, heat treated for strength, and cut wire up to 18 AWG while keeping fly-off to a minimum; the compact 1/2 in jaw gets into tight spots, the thermoplastic rubber grips stay comfortable through long sessions, and the whole tool is 5 in long and under two ounces. Good to Know

Eighteen AWG copper is the limit; flush-cut edges are ground thin to meet flat, and a cut through steel wire, a screw, a zip tie's steel tang, or anything above the rating chips them, after which the pliers never cut flush again. Cut with the flat side of the jaw toward the work and the beveled side toward the scrap so the clean end is the one that stays. Fly-off is minimized, not eliminated; a short clipped end still leaves the jaw with some speed, so angle the cut away from your face and wear eye protection, especially on a board full of leads. Let the spring do the opening and don't force the jaws past where they close, since a flush cutter is adjusted so the edges just meet, and a bent joint leaves a burr on every cut. Keep it for copper and soft wire; aramid yarn and plastic trim fine, but the JIC-190 is made for Kevlar and will outlast this one at it. SK5 is a high carbon steel, so wipe it dry and give the joint a drop of oil now and then.
