Kevlar® is in a fiber cable to resist being cut, which is the problem when you need to cut it. After the jacket is stripped, the aramid yarn has to come off cleanly and close to the jacket so it doesn't bunch up in the connector or fray into the splice, and a plain blade slides through it or pushes it aside. The Jonard Tools JIC-190 Flush Cut Kevlar® Cutters solve that with a serrated upper edge that grips the yarn so it can't slide out of the cut, a non-serrated lower blade that shears it and can be sharpened for a long life, and thin-nose jaws that reach into a breakout or a boot and cut flush to the jacket. The same flush cut trims cable insulation, tape, and cable ties. The jaws are high carbon steel, the TPR handles are spring loaded so the tool opens on its own between cuts, and it's covered by Jonard's lifetime warranty. For a shear that cuts wire as well as Kevlar®, see the JIC-186.

Features

  • Thin-nose jaws, flush cut. Reach into tight places and cut the Kevlar® flush to the fiber jacket.
  • Serrated upper edge. Holds the aramid yarn in place for a clean, precise cut instead of letting it slide.
  • Sharpenable lower blade. The non-serrated blade can be resharpened for continuous long life.
  • Insulation, tape, and cable ties. The flush cut trims those too, so the cutter earns its place on the bench.
  • High carbon steel jaws. 0.87 in (22.1 mm) long.
  • Spring-loaded TPR handles. Return to open on their own to reduce hand fatigue over a day of terminations.
  • Lifetime warranty.

Where It Fits

It suits fiber technicians terminating field-installable and epoxy connectors, where the Kevlar® has to be trimmed flush before the boot or crimp ring goes on, splicing crews who cut the strength members back at every breakout and every tray, data center and enterprise teams building and repairing patch cords, FTTH installers prepping drop cable, anyone who's tried to cut aramid with a wire cutter and watched it slide out the side, and a fiber kit that has a stripper and a cleaver and needs the cutter in between. For wire as well as Kevlar®, the JIC-186 shears cover both; for the strip before the cut, the JIC-375 three-hole stripper and the TLC-027 5-in-1.

Good to Know

Gather the yarn before you cut it: pull the Kevlar® back along the jacket, twist it into a bundle, and cut the bundle in one squeeze close to the jacket, with the serrated edge on the yarn side so it grips, rather than snipping strands a few at a time. A clean flush cut leaves nothing to catch in the connector; a ragged one leaves strands that end up under the crimp or in the ferrule. On a crimped connector, cut the Kevlar® to the length the connector's instructions call for, since the crimp ring usually needs some yarn under it to hold the cable; flush to the jacket is for splice trays and anywhere the strength member isn't anchored. The cutter is for Kevlar®, insulation, tape, and cable ties, not for wire, steel strength members, or the fiber itself; cutting metal in it notches the edge, and the JIC-186 is the tool when wire is in the picture. When the cut starts to push the yarn rather than shear it, sharpen the non-serrated lower blade and leave the serrated edge alone. The spring opens the jaws on their own, so a loop over the handles or a slot in the kit keeps it closed in a pouch. Bare fiber nearby is sharp and goes in a scraps container; the cut Kevlar® doesn't, but it's slippery underfoot.
