Pushing a compression F connector onto quad-shield RG6 is the step that bunches the foil, folds the braid, and leaves the dielectric short of the connector face, and it's the step that decides whether the connection seals. The Jonard Tools FT-6 is a two-ended hand tool for that step. The flaring end goes into the stripped cable and spreads the jacket and the outer shields open so the connector slides on instead of plowing into the foil; the insertion end then seats the F connector fully on RG6, RG59, or RG11 without a plier or a thumb. It works on polyethylene-jacketed, plenum, tri-shield, and quad-shield RG6, where the extra shield layers make bunching worst, and it's heat-treated carbon steel with a black oxide finish, so it keeps working in the cold where a plastic tool snaps. Four and a half inches, a quarter pound, and in the pocket next to the compression tool.

Good to Know

Strip the cable to the connector maker's dimensions and fold the braid back over the jacket first; then put the flaring end into the end of the cable, between the dielectric and the shields, and twist it in gently to open the jacket and the outer foil and braid into a bell. Don't flare the inner foil that's bonded to the dielectric, which is what the connector's inner post slides under, and don't over-flare, since a jacket spread too far won't be held by the connector's compression ring. Push the connector on by hand as far as it goes, then use the insertion end to seat it the rest of the way until the dielectric is flush with the inside of the connector face; the tool pushes straight, which is what keeps the center conductor from bending. Then compress. The flaring end is sized for RG6 and quad RG6; the insertion end works for RG59 and RG11 connectors too, but flaring RG59 or RG11 with it is outside the sheet's rating. Check the connector afterward for foil visible behind the compression ring, which means the flare wasn't enough, and for a center conductor that's bent or short, which means the connector went on crooked. Wipe the tool dry after a wet day; black oxide resists rust but doesn't prevent it. Confirm the drop is dead before you touch the center conductor; a CATV drop can carry power to an amplifier.
