Getting into a fiber cable without touching the fibers inside is a job for a tool matched to the cable, and the Jonard Tools TK-107 is the whole set. Six mid-span slit and ring tools cover cable from 1.2 mm to 18.2 mm in overlapping ranges, so every drop, distribution, and loose-tube cable on the job has a tool that fits it, with a line on top of each one that shows where the blade sits so you can place a slit or a ring cut without guessing. Around them are the tools for the rest of the access: a buffer tube ringer for tubes up to 6 mm, a drop cable slitter, a round cable strip and ring tool, a ratcheting cable slitter and a riser slitting tool for the heavier jackets, the CableSaber for long slits down a sheath, a three-hole fiber stripper that takes the jacket, buffer, and coating down to the 125 µm glass, and Kevlar shears for the strength member. Fourteen tools in a 21-pocket case, bought once instead of a drawer of single-use entry tools.

• Mid-span slit and ring tools, 1.2 to 18.2 mm. MS-306 (1.2 to 3.3 mm), MS-316 (2.9 to 6.8 mm), MS-326 (5 to 10 mm), MS-336 (7.9 to 11 mm), MS-426 (5.8 to 12 mm), MS-526 (9.8 to 18.2 mm). Each has a blade-position line on top for fast, accurate placement.
• Buffer tube and drop cable access. BTR-6 buffer tube ringer, for tubes up to 6 mm; FOD-2000 fiber optic drop cable slitter.
• Jacket slitting. CST-1900 round cable strip and ring tool; RCS-25 ratcheting cable slitter; RST-8514 riser slitting tool; AST-200 CableSaber for slitting a sheath lengthwise.
• Stripping and cutting. JIC-375 three-hole fiber optic stripper, for the jacket, the buffer coating, and the 250 µm coating down to the 125 µm glass; JIC-186 wire and Kevlar cutting shears for the strength member.
• H-90 rugged 21-pocket tool case. A pocket for every tool, so the lightweight slitters stay protected from scratches and a missing one shows before you leave the site.

Good to Know

Pick the slit and ring tool by the cable's outside diameter, and when a cable falls in the overlap between two ranges, use the one where it sits nearer the middle of the range; the tool holds the cable better and the blade depth is more predictable. Set the depth on a scrap before the first live cut on a cable you haven't opened before, since the aim is to cut the sheath and nothing underneath, and a blade set for a thick jacket will reach the buffer tubes in a thin one. For a mid-span entry, make the two ring cuts first, then the lengthwise slit between them, and peel the sheath in sections; the CableSaber is for the long slit on a heavy sheath, and the ratcheting slitter and riser tool for jackets the mid-span tools won't bite. Ring a buffer tube with the BTR-6 and flex it to snap the tube rather than cutting all the way through, which is what keeps the blade off the fibers. The three-hole stripper takes the fiber down in stages, jacket, buffer, coating, and the coating comes off in short pulls so the glass isn't scored. Kevlar dulls ordinary cutters; use the shears. None of these tools cleave, clean, or test, which is what the TK-151 prep kit adds, and none of them are rated for cutting into a cable that may carry power, so confirm what's in a hybrid cable before you open it.
