The strip right before the cleave is the one that can't have a scratch in it, and the Jonard Tools JIC-125 is the compact stripper built for only that strip: it removes the 250 µm coating from optical fiber to expose the 125 µm glass underneath, and nothing else. The single stripping hole is preset at the factory, so there's nothing to adjust and nothing to get wrong. Close the jaws on the fiber at the length you want to strip, squeeze, and pull the tool straight off the end, and the coating slides off in one piece with the glass beneath it unmarked. The high carbon steel blades are ground and hardened for a long life, the yellow cushioned grips are easy on the hand through a day of splices, and at 5-3/16 in it fits a shirt pocket. Backed by Jonard's lifetime warranty.

Features

  • Strips 250 µm coating to the 125 µm fiber. The one strip every fusion splice, mechanical splice, and splice-on connector needs, without nicks or scratches on the glass.
  • Factory preset, one hole. The stripping hole is set at the factory, so there are no adjustments to make and no setting to drift.
  • High carbon steel blades. Ground and hardened for a clean cut through the coating and a long service life.
  • Compact. 5-3/16 in (131.8 mm) long with yellow cushioned grips.
  • Lifetime warranty.

Where It Fits

It suits fusion splicing technicians who strip the coating off every fiber before cleaning and cleaving, FTTH installers fitting splice-on and field-installable connectors on drop cable, data center and enterprise crews splicing pigtails and terminating at panels, anyone who wants a small dedicated 250 µm stripper that lives at the splicer rather than reaching for the smallest hole of a three-hole tool, and a pocket or a pouch where the full-size JIC-175 won't go.

Good to Know

The tool strips the 250 µm coating only; the jacket and any 900 µm tight buffer come off first with a jacket stripper and a buffer stripper, or with the two larger holes of a three-hole stripper such as the JIC-375, and the JIC-125 takes over for the final strip. Strip in short pulls of an inch or so rather than one long pull, and keep the tool square to the fiber, since twisting or angling the tool is what scratches the glass. Pull straight off the end; a sideways pull at the last moment is the usual cause of a broken fiber. A strip that leaves shreds of coating on the fiber means the blades need cleaning, which a fiber wipe and a little alcohol fixes; a strip that keeps breaking the fiber means the tool is being pulled off-axis or the blades have reached the end of their life, since there's no adjustment to make. Wipe the bare fiber with an alcohol wipe after stripping and before cleaving, and don't touch the glass once it's clean. The stripped coating and any broken fiber go in a scraps can, not the floor. If you'd rather have one tool for jacket, buffer, and coating, the JIC-375 three-hole stripper does all three; this is the smaller, single-purpose version.
