Every stripped and cleaved fiber leaves a sliver of glass behind that's too small to see and sharp enough to go through skin, and the Jonard Tools FSK-5 is the kit that keeps those slivers out of your eyes, your hands, and your customer's carpet. It packs the safety side of fiber work into one rugged case: a 22 × 14 in work mat that makes fiber scraps visible and gives you a clean surface to prep on, safety glasses for working with bare glass, a 5 in fiber tweezer with rounded tips for picking up fibers and scraps without touching them, a disposal can for the scraps and used wipes, and a pack of wet fiber wipes for cleaning fibers and connectors. It's the kit for a van or a bench that has the stripping, cleaving, and splicing tools but nowhere safe to put the glass.
What's in the Kit
- FWM-2214 fiber optic work mat, 22 × 14 in. A dedicated work surface for fiber prep that makes scraps of bare fiber stand out so they get picked up rather than lost.
- SG-5 safety glasses. Eye protection for working with glass fiber, or anywhere eye protection is needed.
- FTW-5 fiber optic tweezers, 5 in. Fine point with rounded edges and a non-magnetic stainless body, for handling fiber, electrical wire, and small components without damaging them.
- FDC-66 fiber scraps disposal can. A dedicated container for cleaved ends, stripped fiber, and used wipes, so the glass goes in the can and not the bin.
- FW-5 fiber wipes, wet. Alcohol wipes for cleaning bare fiber after stripping and connector end faces before mating.
- H-22 rugged carrying case with straps. Keeps the kit together and protected between jobs.
Where It Fits
It suits splicing and termination crews who want the safety gear in one place rather than scattered across the van, FTTH installers working in a customer's home where a stray fiber on the floor is a liability, data center and enterprise technicians terminating at a panel where the work surface is a cable tray, training rooms and labs where every student needs the same safe setup, companies putting a baseline safety kit beside every fiber tool kit they issue, and anyone who has found a fiber splinter in a fingertip a day later and would rather not again.
Good to Know
The routine is simple and worth making automatic: glasses on before the first strip, mat down under the work, every cleaved end and stripped length picked up with the tweezers and dropped in the can, and the can emptied into a sealed container, never the open trash. Bare fiber is glass; it doesn't show on an X-ray and it doesn't dissolve, so a splinter that goes in stays in until it's pulled out, which is the whole argument for the mat and the can. The work mat shows fiber scraps against its surface, so a quick look before packing up catches what the tweezers missed; wipe it down rather than brushing it with a hand. Keep food and drink off the mat and away from the work, since a sliver in a sandwich is a trip to urgent care. Use the wet wipes on the bare fiber after stripping and before cleaving, and on connector end faces before mating; the pack is small, so a box of replacement wipes belongs on the same order. The glasses are for glass splinters, not for laser light; never look into a fiber or a port on a live link, with or without them. The kit has no stripping, cleaving, or cleaning tools; it's the safety layer that goes alongside a prep kit such as the TK-121, TK-161, or TK-179.
