Cleaning a fiber connector without inspecting it is guesswork, and the Jonard Tools TK-189 is the kit that takes the guessing out: the cleaning tools for every single-fiber connector type and a 400x inspection microscope to see whether they worked. The FCC-125 and FCC-250 push cleaners clean 1.25 mm and 2.5 mm ferrules, LC and MU, SC, ST, and FC, on the cable end and inside a bulkhead adapter; the FCC-300 universal cleaner cleans simplex and duplex jumper ends with one swipe across a cassette; fifty wet wipes in 91% isopropyl alcohol handle the bare fiber and the stubborn residue; and the FIM-400 microscope magnifies the end-face 400 times, enough to see the scratches, pits, and film that a dry pass leaves behind and that stop a link from coming up. An FCT-100 connector tool for LC and SC connectors and a zoom flashlight for dark panels round out a 21-pocket case.

Good to Know

The routine is inspect, clean, inspect: look at the end-face first, clean only if it needs it, and look again before you mate it, since a clean pass is the only proof that a connector is ready. Start dry with the push cleaner or the cassette, and step up to a wet wipe only when a dry pass leaves residue, because too much fluid is its own contaminant; a wipe is for the plug end and the bare fiber, and the push cleaners are what reach into a bulkhead adapter. Match the cleaner to the ferrule, 1.25 mm for LC and MU and 2.5 mm for SC, ST, and FC; the wrong one won't seat and can scuff the end-face. The microscope is for dark fiber only: an optical microscope puts the end-face in your eye, and a live single-mode fiber carries invisible infrared at a level that can do permanent damage, so power the link down or disconnect it at the far end before you inspect, and never look into a fiber or a port by eye. At 400x you'll see scratches and pits as well as dirt; a scratch across the core is a connector to replace, not reclean. The push cleaners and the cassette are good for hundreds of cleanings each and the wipes are a consumable, so stock refills. The kit covers single-fiber connectors; for MPO, the TK-287 cleaning kit adds the MPO push cleaner.
