The Jonard Tools TK-183 is the small kit for the fiber side of a termination: strip the fiber, cleave it, clean the connector, and find the fault, in one nylon case. The three-hole JIC-375 strips the 1.6 to 3 mm jacket, the 600 to 900 µm buffer coating, and the 250 µm coating down to the 125 µm glass; the FC-220 cleaver cuts 900 µm buffered or 250 µm coated fiber and is suited to mechanical splicing and quick field termination of fiber connectors; fifty wet wipes in a non-abrasive, residue-free 91% isopropyl alcohol solvent clean the end-faces of 1.25 mm and 2.5 mm connectors and the bulkhead adapters they mate into; and the VFL-25 visual fault locator lights up a break, a tight bend, or a bad connection with visible red light. It's the kit for a technician terminating with mechanical splices or pre-polished field connectors, where the cleaver has to be good but doesn't have to be fusion-grade, and the TK-184 is the same kit with the FC-500 precision cleaver for fusion work.

• JIC-375 three-hole fiber optic stripper. Strips the 1.6 to 3 mm fiber jacket, the 600 to 900 µm buffer coating, and the 250 µm coating to expose the 125 µm glass fiber.
• FC-220 fiber cleaver. Cleaves 900 µm buffered or 250 µm coated fiber, suited to mechanical splicing and quick field termination of fiber connectors.
• FW-50 wet fiber wipes, pack of 50. Non-abrasive, residue-free 91% isopropyl alcohol wipes for cleaning connector end-faces quickly.
• VFL-25 visual fault locator. Identifies breakpoints, leaks, poor connections, and stress points in fiber optic cable.
• H-20 rugged nylon carrying case. Keeps the set together and the cleaver protected.

Where It Fits

Good to Know

The FC-220 is the cleaver for mechanical splices and field-installable connectors, where the connector's own index-matching gel and alignment take up a slightly less perfect end; for fusion splicing, where the cleave angle sets the splice loss, the FC-500 precision cleaver in the TK-184 is the right tool. Either way, keep the blade clean and dry, let the cleaver do the work rather than forcing the fiber, and put every cleaved scrap in a sharps container, because bare glass slivers go through skin and don't show on an X-ray. Strip in stages, jacket, then buffer, then coating, taking the coating off in short pulls rather than one long one so the glass isn't scored, and clean the bare fiber with a wipe before it goes in the cleaver; a field connector's instructions give the strip and cleave lengths, and they matter. The wet wipes are for the end-face and the bare fiber; for a connector already in a bulkhead adapter, a push cleaner like the FCC-125 or FCC-250 reaches where a wipe can't. Fifty wipes go quickly, so stock refills. The visual fault locator puts a visible red laser down a fiber, and a break or a tight bend glows through the jacket on short runs; it's also the quickest check that a mechanical splice is seated, since a bad one glows. Use it on a dark fiber, not a live one, never look into the output or into an unterminated fiber while it's on, and remember it finds the gross faults, not the loss, which is a power meter and light source's job. The kit has no cable-entry tools, so a slitter or ringer for the jacket and a pair of Kevlar shears come from elsewhere.
